Thoughts on power tonneau vs. manual tonneau

I read on this forum somewhere that the problem with early tonneau’s was that they were using one motor to open and close it. It was like opening and closing a wide drawer with only one hand — it kept getting stuck from slight differences between one side and the other.

Makes sense, I'd also seen mention a couple times the problem was expansion/contraction of the material selected.

I don't really understand all the concerns with the powered tonneau. It'll be covered under warranty for the duration of time that it is most likely to break.

Especially because it will likely be fixable by mobile service. It will be a long time before most owners live near a Rivian service center. Mobile service is remarkably nice.

My concern with the power tonneau is the sliding and stacking motion it uses to retract. I expect it was selected due to volumetric efficiency, but aside from being slow, it seems like it will wear very quickly, especially as it gets dirty. A rolling tonneau cover like what has been shown in the cybertruck prototype seems like it would be far more durable and easier to move quickly.

If the manual tonneau is as rigid as the powered and light enough to not be a pain, I will probably swap to manual.
