For those of you who had a trade in, how was the process and did you get a fair trade in value?

There are a few good threads on this already, but the whole used car market has shifted so who knows. If the past is any indicator, there is almost no discernable pattern to which dealers will over / under value your used car with their offer. Many have reported generous offers from Rivian, and as many or more have reported better offers elsewhere.

Some states let you reduce the tax paid if you trade instead of selling in a separate transaction, so this gives Rivian some room to succeed with low offers.

The used car market has declined anywhere from 10% - 30% since the summer. But it still pays to shop around. In my case, I saved ~$700 by declining Rivian's trade-in offer for my 2015 Tesla S 70D (only 22,100 miles).

Rivian offered a trade-in value of $35,500 that was slightly higher than the average quote I got from ten different sources (most online). However the best offer I got was from a dealership, AutoNation Ford, which was $4,500 higher than Rivian's offer. I calculated the WA + local tax rate here (yay no RTA for the R1T! see also) as 10.75%, so 1.1075 * $35,500 = $39,316 equivalent value needed from a purchaser to offset the lost tax benefit of trading.

Compared to quotes I got this summer, my best offer declined by about $5,000. Some offers dropped nearly 30% compared to the summer. The average drop was $7,000. I may have slight regrets now about sticking with OC instead of getting a BM build months ago.

Here's an interactive viz of my analysis on Tableau Public: https://public.tableau.com/views/Usedcarmarketdecline/Usedcarvaluationdecline
