My S including the wall charger sits at $78,500. If I add the $2000 RUS I am at $80,500 with the Charger, but right at $80,000 without.

So my question is pretty simple, does the Wall Charger count toward MSRP?

No, it does not count towards your MSRP. Only the base MSRP of your truck minus accessories counts towards that cap. Wall charger is an accessory.

It will be interesting to see what anyone who purchased the charger says.

It should not be on the Monroney sticker where the MSRP comes from as it is not part of the build.

Let me see if I get this right.

I purchased the Wall EVSE in the same transaction as my R1T.

The window sticker (Monroney) does not list the EVSE or any other accessories I purchased at the same time.

The Purchase Summary and Purchase Agreement DO include the accessories, however. And when I went to register the vehicle I was charged highway use tax on the total price -- including accessories -- despite Rivian also charging me retail sales tax for the accessories. So I was double-taxed.

Thanks for confirming. Sorry about that double tax issue.

Actually, since some of this recently changed, I looked it up again just to be sure and the language is different now. Please disregard my first comment - that was based on what we knew prior to the IRS clarifying these rules. You could also ask your accountant to get another more informed opinion on what ”MSRP” means, but this seems to be the IRS’ new definition:

In addition, the vehicle's manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) can't exceed:

  • $80,000 for vans, sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks
  • $55,000 for other vehicles
MSRP is the retail price of the automobile suggested by the manufacturer, including options, accessories and trim but excluding destination fees. It isn't necessarily the price you pay.

I spoke with my Guide today and he tried to find out if there was a definitive answer as to whether the charger is considered an accessory. He asked around and couldn’t find an answer.

I said I could drop the charger from my build And buy through the gear shop. He said I could do that and keep it at $80k, but I would have to pay $800 not the $500 pre March price.

The penalty for being on the wrong side of this IRS reg is significant ($7500). There are times to be frugal. And there are times to play it safe. If I were @Sully151, I would buy the EVSE through the Gear Shop. My 2 cents.

The charger doesn't count. Its not accessory nor option. It's a separate thing attached to your home which technically can be used for any EV.

Again, MSRP has been a well-defined term for more than 60 years now. It doesn't include the charger you bought, the t-shirt you bought, the stuffed Gary doll, the cargo cross-bars, etc. If it's an option that's integral to the vehicle, like the paint, or needs to be attached by the "dealer", like the wheels, then it's part of the vehicle and part of the MSRP. The Monroney is required by law to display the MSRP. The Monroney does NOT show the charger (or the cross-bars, etc.).

Or get on EBay FB marketplace for $400….or better yet get a non Rivian charger that is even better for less!

Tesla wall connector is better anyway. Get that instead and save vs. Rivian charger.
