I give up. Never stated it was binding. Simply stated the price is higher than what RJ said, and provided plenty of evidence. Totally fine to raise the price, they don't owe us anything. They can charge $500k for it if they want. I never stated otherwise.

Apparently simply stating the fact that the price is higher than RJ said it would be makes me an entitled, whining millennial-type who is holding a legally binding document. People don't take kindly to negative information 'round these parts.

Well said.

Go to Ford's or Ram's truck configurator and do an honest "high-end, well-equipped" rig and see how rapidly it surpasses $70k.

The Rivian R1T (and R1S) are amazing values, highly-engineered techno-marvels. Especially after federal & state tax credits
I think the Rivian pricing is fair.... But just to play devil's advocate, for a moment, no one pays MSRP for a Ford or Ram. You have to immediately take 10-15% off of Ford/Ram prices and that's still high-retail. So the inflated MSRP numbers are pure fiction.

Normally yes, but demand is outpacing supply right now.

So the quote from Reuters is apparently "Rivian founder and chief executive R.J. Scaringe told Reuters the mid-range R1T pickup truck with a glass sky panel that can change from blue to clear was about $69,000. It can travel 300 miles on a full charge."
I'm pretty sure RJ was just saying that on a blue bird day, the panel will appear blue. And on a cloudy day, it will change to clear/transparent.

He did, however, leave out some details about the insulation and UV protection offered. That would have been useful.

@cohall I think you are stating things pretty simply and well done. @skyote, @DucRider to name a few continue to be measured voices here and I strongly appreciate it.

I know I might be stirring the pot, but when people say Rivian doesnt OWE us any communication, it is these changes over the past few years that have people like me nervous.
I am not OWED anything but after the past two years its my OPINION that all the details should be released this close to the indicated release date.

I think the R1T as described on their website is a good value FWIW.

Unfortunately due to strong demand, people are paying sticker and above (!!!) for cars right now. This is particularly acute in the full size suv space

I don't think we should use exceptional times to describe normal processes.

Outside of pandemic supply constraints, no rational person pays MSRP for a Ford.

Yeah, but if you compared a LE R1 vs one of those, and were planning or needing to purchase this year; that's the reality you are faced with. Alot of the automakers are also starting to like fat profits over volume, so this may be changing after the pandemic related surge ends anyways.

Ford is going to have a hard time changing their image and customer sentiment that they spent over a century building. Consumers don't view Ford as premium/luxury and they certainly don't want to pay MSRP for it.

This is where new brands have a distinct advantage. They don't have a "legacy" weighing them down.

There is a small subset of people who will be forced to make a purchase -- such as a vehicle was totaled in an accident. However, most people buying vehicles do so at least partially out of a "want" rather than pure need. Delaying a purchase 12 months is something most buyers can accommodate.

I said about a week ago that it won't surprise me (but will disappoint me) if the true purchase pricing for LE's is raised a bit, maybe $2-3k in this current market. All along, even now, Rivian's site has a disclaimer of *pricing may change.

I'll just second the sentiment that at two weeks before the month (June) in which deliveries are supposed to begin, out-dated website photos and disclaimers about pricing/specs (as opposed to confirmed pricing/specs) just seems odd.

I would be surprised if you ever see the " pricing/specs are subject to change" verbiage ever go away.

That is a standard disclaimer that is almost mandatory in the litigious society we live in where a simple common sense thing like this has to be called out rather than implied.

Traditional OEMs usually set an MSRP that is good for the entire model year (with rare exceptions), then throw incentives at vehicles that aren't moving.
Tesla changes their MSRP (up or down) at the drop of a hat - "dynamic pricing".
Not sure what approach Rivian is going to take - hopefully they will stick with what they have published for at least the LE. But, you can expect a $1K+ destination and doc fee (my guess is $1,200) on top of the MSRP (even for a factory delivery). Only rarely is that included in the published MSRP.
