There's a lot more to being a truck than the size of the bed. If Tesla really is giving it a 3500 lbs payload capacity, I can't really imagine how well that's going to drive for non-truck use, since HD trucks with air suspension still aren't great to drive unloaded.

People are complaining about the material the Rivian's bed is made out of, I'm excited to hear how well things stay put on the smooth stainless steel the cybertruck has.
Bed is no longer stainless. But it doesn't seem to be a design to carry bulk material.

CT does kneel for loading, so the lift over the sides probably isn't bad.

The biggest controversy is the styling. I found the truck to be awkward looking when I first saw the truck during the reveal back in November, 2019.

Like most viewers that night I thought Elon was pulling a fast one. I thought for sure that the “real” CT would roll onto the stage after the first truck was rolled off. I left my deposit the next day just in case I changed my mind.

I then viewed the concept at the Peterson Museum in LA. The CT looks stunning in person. The awkward styling disappeared and the truck looked sleek and futuristic in it‘s SS skin. I was very glad that I decided to leave an early deposit on the truck.

Tesla has refined the final design by supposedly shrinking the dimensions a few percent to make sure it fits in the Boring tunnels and in owners standard 2-car garages.

My prediction? The Cybertruck is going to be a HUGE hit for Tesla.

Here are some pics I took at the museum.

I haven't been following the updates on the cybertruck that much. I'm on the wrong side of the polarizing exterior design. Are they still planning on shipping the truck with an integrated loading ramp system?

Actually they chose not to shrink it at all.

"Limited production in 2023" means meaningful deliveries around mid 2024. The truck is still a longways off, though I have an early preorder and am looking forward to seeing the final design. As of now, there are some interesting contrasts to the R1 series. The 6.5 foot bed with sloped tonneau and operable passthrough window for HVAC is going to be amazing for camping. It being a bigger vehicle means it should also have cabin volume more similar to an F-150, if not larger and I think the design is an interesting departure. Not sure why it offends so many, but whatever.

Things I am personally skeptical of:
-Hardened glass on the doors would be expensive and present safety questions, expect it to get cut
-Raw stainless aesthetic durability in 4 seasons of pine sap and bird shit
-Actual stressed skin design as claimed seems like it would raise insurance rates, present problems for mass market vehicle. Expect it to be minimal, if at all.
- I think the massive size doesn't match up with the typical Tesla buyer. Going to be an absolute bear to navigate in urban areas, parking lots, especially now having removed parking sensors.
-Lack of door handles, turn stalk, drive stalk is classic Apple BS and going to turn a lot of people off
- Ramp in the tailgate would be a heavy, expensive, rattle-prone, janky pile of shit that 95% of consumers wouldn't use. Expect it to be dropped or optional
-I think the cost will start at $75-80K

We know all the major features except price. Tesla builds everything in a similar way. You could not find a single person in the auto industry who does not think that volume production of the cybertruck is even a valid question. I dislike Musk too, and not owning a Tesla is a benefit of buying a Rivian. My model Y is a great car.
Can you decode this for me? It’s early and I think I need more coffee. "You could not find a single person in the auto industry who does not think that volume production of the cybertruck is even a valid question.”

The Hummer EV was the first vehicle I've ever driven with 4 wheel steering. It made it easier to navigate in parking lots than the Rivian is, even considering how much larger of a vehicle it was. You could get really close to vehicles at the end of the aisle and still be able to steer into the nearest lane without worry of hitting the vehicles to your inside. It wasn't enough to make me want to stick with it over the Rivian, but IMO it was the biggest pro it had going for it. The sheer physical size was still awkward when actually parking though.

I wonder about the ramp too. The obvious huge downside is that damaging the ramp may disable the tailgate

It has the Model S steering wheel too. I assume the structural satinless designed has worked becuse of the press Tesla is currently installing. No need for that press if the skin wasn't structural.

The stainless will likely get stained unattractively. I assume stainless refurbishment is a thing.

A three row cybertruck SUV is likely the next vehicle in this line.

I'm not too excited because first off I am not even convinced that it will ever exist. If it does exist it has that yoke instead of a steering wheel and the design presents some issues with usability that don't really make buying it seem like something I want to personally do. I doubt the vision of behind and to the sides of you will be that great in it. I suppose that could be made up for with cameras but only time will tell.

The windshield wiper could also be an issue. There is a Tesla service center within 30 minutes of me whereas Rivian's is 4 hours away currently. That could incentivize me to make the switch depending on how reliable my R1 is up until I would even qualify for a cyber truck with production and all the backorders. I trade my vehicles in roughly every 3 years, and I think if the cyber truck ever even exists it would be at least this long until I would be able to buy one with no preorder.

So I see it as a possible truck for my NEXT EV truck. By then all the domestics will have their own EV trucks out as well so the playing field will be much deeper. As of right now I would probably trade this Rivian in for another Rivian when that 3 years happens. It just fits my needs better than the others. I like that it's smaller than the standard 150 size, I don't need it to haul massive loads and if I did I would use a trailer anyways.

So unless the Cybertruck really knocked my socks off I won't be getting one. Who knows though, I try to get the best vehicle for my needs at the time they are out and that is always changing so it's anyone's guess what truck that will be in 3 years time.

I ordered a Cybertruck on launch day and have/owned three Tesla’s, including Plaid. I just took delivery of the R1T and really appreciate it as compared to the Tesla’s. I may or may not own a Cybertruck, but I probably will exercise my early order for speculative purposes. The size and overall design and material quality of these initial Rivian’s, save for the few design defects, are outstanding. Over designed really. 232 screws in each door panel?! Who does that (Spoiler: Rivian)?!
