R1S 22" Tire Replacement Time - Decision Paralysis - Advice/Experience

I am looking at my options for replacing OEM Pirelli's and not really happy with any of my choices atm. What are people seeing.

My Riv is the 2023 Gen 1 Adventure 4 Motor
My current tire tread situation
Rear's 2/32 and 3/32 (Must Replace of course)
Front's 5/32 (Replaced due to nail 1 year ago) 8/32 (Replaced due to nail 3 months ago)
Current Mileage: Aprox 22,400

My needs/wants in order: Safety, Longevity, Range

Driving Habits: Mostly city driving, 4-5 trips a year from Portland, OR to Vancouver, BC Canada. Typically just me, wife, and young child. I tow a small utlility trailer a few times a year (plants, dump runs, mostly low weight)

Options I am aware of from research here, reddit, google etc. (I didn't include some that just didn't really feel like an option for my usecase)

1. Replace 2 Pirelli's - Discount quoted me $1337 - Concern I am going to be back in a year (though maybe more 22 options then)

2. Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 275/50R22 115H XL (All 4 replace) - I know there are a variety of 115 XL options this and the continental are the ones I hear most about
  • Under Load Guidelines - Has been endlessly debated, I think I could make it work but is it really safe
  • $317 a tire (Discount, Costco, Tirerack)
  • Has a 70k guarantee (no idea on fine print for this)
  • Biggest concern is them being 115 when Rivian recommends 116
3. Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 LT275/50R22 119/116S E (All 4 replace)
  • E Tires
  • $398 a tire
  • 50k guarantee
  • Biggest concern - These tires are 12 more pounds each, reports are varying on the range impact from these. Could be up to 40-50 miles a charge loss

4. Rivian Shop 20 Inch Wheel/Tire All Season Full Replace
  • Have a $500 credit from a referral so brings the price down (approx $3300)
  • Gives me future flexibility
  • Lose the beautiful 22" wheels and profile
  • Biggest concern - I hear there is range loss on the OEM 20"

5. Aftermarket wheels 20" (Atomic Wheels or something) Plus Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 275/65R20 116H XL
  • Gives me tire flexibility now
  • Will cost at least 4k
  • Lose the beauty and profile of the Rivian 22 Wheels

Any advice, personal experience, recommendations would be great. Obviously with a 2/32 and a 3/32 tread depth I need to make a decision soon.

I have these Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 275/50R22 115H XL on my 22 R1S. I put them on about 9100 miles ago, rotated them at 7800 miles. My opinion, they are smoother (probably because they are 115s) than the original and noticeably quieter as well.

I took a 7500 mile trip, mostly highway shortly after getting them. On trips I drive in conserve on longer highway stretch’s in low, all other driving I’m usually in all purpose standard height. Just checked and after 9100 miles they are at 10.2/32, they started at 11/32.

Ran into a couple of very heavy rainstorms on my trip and I was very pleased with how they handled in the wet weather. They handle well in dry as well, I do not usually push the performance but under normal driving they are great.

Mileage is pretty good, might lose a tad over the OEMs, previously similar 7500 miles trip I did 2.25 miles/kWh. With these I did 2.15 miles/kWh.

For comparison, I replaced my OEM tires at 28k, they were still at 3/32 but I was going on that long trip and I did not want to push the OEM tires past 35k miles since they were at 3/32.

Go with option 2. Just did the same after researching an eternity. Zero regret and as many can echo here, smoother, quieter and more comfortable than OEM and I'm actually getting slightly better range too. Discount Tire had no hesitation installing them.

Edit: Also night and difference day on the highway. I used to dread roadtrips and now I find the car almost too comfortable. Didnt realize how much of a difference tires alone can make in that regard.

Option 3: After 10,000 miles, I haven't noticed a significant range hit. It's smooth and quiet. I don't use it in the winter; I have some Nokians for that.

Go with the Michelins but get the 116s as you tow. I switched to these and live in PDX too. They work great on dry wet and snowy conditions up in the mountains. Very smooth and quiet tire with a long warranty. You will enjoy them.

Have you lost any range with the heavier tire?

Go with the Michelins but get the 116s as you tow. I switched to these and live in PDX too. They work great on dry wet and snowy conditions up in the mountains. Very smooth and quiet tire with a long warranty. You will enjoy them.

I've been running the Continental Terrain Contact HT, also a 115, for over 25k miles now. I will 100% buy these again when they eventually wear out - they are better than the OE Pirelli in every way except the load rating. I don't tow or carry heavy loads that might make the 115 an issue.

option 3, with 119, 100%
I did this after the Pirelli's wore out at 26k.
handles the weight of the R1S, quiet, no range loss, holds up very well, great traction.

I just went with option 3 on my 2026 R1T dual/max. I live at altitude with sharp curves in steep roads and wanted the extra sidewall stiffness for the weight of the vehicle. Honestly, immediate difference in the vehicle. I didn't even realize how bad the Pirelli's actually were. Even if you do lose a few miles of range, totally worth it. I only have 60-70 miles on them so can't really comment on range too much yet, but the ride is night and day.
