Many people are thinking that the Premium trim will be the first one with the RAP1+LiDar, but only Rivian knows for sure. The Launch Edition will eventually be replaced with a Performance trim, but the upgrades will all be sold separately (A+, tow package, key fob, etc.)

Based on Rivian’s previous R1 Launch Editions (from 7/2021 for R1T and 8/2021 for R1S to 1/2022), and the auto industry in general, the R2 Launch Edition will probably be available for 6-7 months.
Which lines up with Dec 2026 Premium trim release and RAP1 😀

How do they plan on avoiding what Tesla just did where they pretty much said "Yea your Model 3 from X date isn't as good as Y date so it just won't ever be able to do FSD, Sorry not sorry" The newsletter does contain the disclaimer "Autonomy+ product features remain available during the lifetime of feature support for the hardware on the vehicle at delivery. Available features vary by vehicle model. Autonomy+ upgrade will remain with the vehicle upon ownership transfer " So they already have their legal butts covered.

I'm excited for the vehicle , I'm definitely getting one as long as there isn't anything crazy in the works with safety/reliability which is also why I feel bad for anyone getting one this year because they're going to have 1 of 25k vehicles that are just worse than the 200k+ coming after while also dealing with all the first edition issues.
This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the value of RAP1 and LiDAR. There's no immediate light switch that turns on when they are for sale at the end of the year that makes them better. Years down the road, the platforms will start to diverge in some very very advanced software features that not everybody cares about.

Rivian has been very careful in what they are promising about launch edition software capabilities. They aren't promising Level 4 autonomy with Gen 2 cars. Tesla has been promising the moon for a decade so that's why they get in massive trouble with customers and are forced into hardware retrofits.

Rivian has openly said that the Lidar/new computer is coming around the end of 2026 and that the older cars will not be able to be retrofitted. Im not sure what else they can do.

This is not correct and a misunderstanding. Tesla only in public ever made statements that the car would do certain things. At no time did they ever actually sell a car in writing that ever did these things.

On the other hand rivian actively did sell a car as doing things it never did (hands-free driving).

Tesla is releasing a software called v14 lite and that will do everything that the car was initially sold to do.

if you go back on wayback machine and read the description of FSD back in 2017, it's a system that conducts short and long trips in almost all circumstances with no input from the person in the driver's seat. The car will enter park seek mode when you get to the destination (aka banish).

Anyone with a legacy model S or X before 2021 most likely will not get v14 lite. They have a poorly performing version of FSD for some reason and it probably has to do with them having an inferior HW3 computer and some missing hardware

So the only people who will get a HW upgrade (aka free car) are those with a legacy S/X who have not transferred to a new tesla by now. That is a very small number of people and tesla has even stripped FSD from some trade-ins if I remember correctly

Rivian on the website advertised the car as having eyes-off (level 3 capability.). In an interview he talked about the rivian drivingn down a trail and meeting you at the bottom. That would be level 4 as the car doing that would have to be performing the entire DDT.

Here is rivian claiming they will do level 3

Rivian actually sold something at the time of purchase (hands free driving) that they can't deliver on

I agree on the hands-free claim, but the site NEVER made any claims on eyes-off for Gen 1.

on the same page you could preorder a rivian

I don't believe tesla ever mentioned anything beyond what can be interpreted as L2 on their website

And past 2018 the description for FSD had very few things it would do
