Great points, that was my general thought too.

electruck - I see and respect your point, and this is why I'm reaching out to everyone here. My final decision will be logical (inserting your Spock back here ;)). Is it logical to trust a company which does not provide clear communication.

Rousie13 - Yes very different grades of cars.

r1t_kev - Hahahaha.. yes your .02 cents are valid. I actually am in need of a car soon, and I'm choosing to get an EV rather than another one. And also choosing to get a nice EV. I rate the VW ID4 and Tesla 3 as good EV choices for me.

AxelR - Great points. Thanks

Max - Very good points. Thanks

Taycanfrank - Yes that's what I'm thinking as well. Buy the other, keep myself on the list with Rivian. Take that hedge.

I really hope someone at Rivian can start properly Communicating.

It isn't hard to tell a more clear and correct picture. The vagueness seems to me is by choice which doesn't make me feel good about the company itself.

Here are what seems to be the communication issues with this company
  1. Rivian said to me three times now that the guide will contact very soon. Can you tell me a date?
  2. Rivian said that there will be a section in your orders page which tells you your delivery. When I called them, they said very soon. Can you tell me a date?
  3. Rivian knew that their COO was leaving, but they didn't disclose that before they went public. Yes that was a loophole, but that does not increase investor confidence
  4. Rivian VP of sales & marketing left Rivian because of culture & communication issues.
So while I love the truck and what all it can do. Been a fan of the platform, and would love to see something.

Just overall all these communication issues, makes me a little worried.
Haven't made a decision yet, therefore reaching out here.

So maybe the answer is to go buy one of the other EVs, keep that EV while I wait for my Rivian guide to contact me and give a date, and if I do get the Rivian, after it arrives, sell the other EV.

An easy way to push back the Rivian decision is to switch to the Max Pack… you can enjoy your 3 or ID4 and then consider swapping (or not).

You're approaching the finish line, based on Rivian's December update of March/April, what we're hearing from other members on their updated timelines (4-6 weeks), and my self-interrupted messaging from RJ in yesterdays Wolfe Research Virtual Global Auto 2-24-2022 interview.

Option 1 - Buy brand new Tesla Model 3 TODAY
We have owned one since 2018, stand in line day one reservation. It's a great car, handles amazingly well for having basic suspension. Fit and finish was absolutely terrible at delivery. The charging infrastructure is arguably the best available today. I'm 6'3", and it's tight for long trips. Trips an hour and under my family of 4 are all happy. Longer, my knees are not happy everyone else is happy. Boys are now 7 and 10. New orders are March for Performance, May for long range. Or used at cray inflated prices.

Option 2 - Buy brand new VW ID4 TODAY
I can't get past the infotainment system, its lag, and the cars performance. Model 3 over this any day given the performance and charging network.

Option 3 - Keep waiting for this magic to happen from Rivian
The magic WILL happen, especially once you drive the R1, if you've not already. On 11/27/2018 when I place my R1S reservation, I wasn't sure they would make it to production. It was a gamble. Many of us took the same gamble back them, including yourself. I believed in the company, their mission and the car was/is like nothing else available today.

We've since learned that it WILL happen, we just need to be patient. I'm not at all patient. I've been made fun of for decades about my lack of patience... but I have somehow waited (impatiently) for the Rivian. I sold my X7 early last year in anticipation of the August launch (terrible decision in hindsight). I go back and forth daily about going another direction, but in the end, the Rivian is what I want and what makes sense for me and my family. So I rent cars until the Rivian comes...

My advice, wait and be patient. Grandma always said, good things come to those that wait...

Here's a hot take that many on here won't enjoy but I fully believe..

If you don't need a truck or a large SUV, you're better off getting a different EV. The benefit of the R1T/R1S are their size and off roading capability. If you aren't going to use those, you'll get more usability/comfort in a different EV. It sounds like you don't need those two things, so grab up a Model 3 or ID4.
I fully agree. If you don’t need the R1 capabilities and are just enamored with Rivian, get the M3 or ID4 now, switch your reservation to Explore Max Pack and then switch it to be first in line for the smaller R2 model that will be closer to your needs as soon as it is announced (I‘m guessing they open reservations sometime next year if the Georgia plant can stay on track for 2024 start of production).
Plus, it moves my June/July delivery slot closer by one vehicle (If they hit a production rate of 500/week by mid-year, I’m now looking at every cancellation as getting my R1S 20 minutes sooner ;)).

I‘m with you here. I really wanted the R1T and technically still have a LE reservation in the April/May window in PDX.

I just bought a Kia EV6 and so far it’s awesome, been very cold and I am getting >3 mi/kWh. I suspect I should have no problem hitting >3.5 mi/kWh in warmer months. Also very fast at least relative to anything I have ever driven (yes the Rivian is much faster)

My reasons for moving on, at least for now.

- No Apple Car Play
- No traditional opening roof
- Poor back seat design, wouldn’t work great for my dog
- Older battery/charging tech
- 1st edition from an unproven company
- Delays! At this point I expect my April/May will be maybe July but who knows
- I also didn’t necessarily need the truck capabilities, I can get my van most places and once I get some different tires on the EV6 I think it will handle snow/ice very well in the PNW mountains.

Still haven’t canceled my LE order but very small chance I actually take delivery of it. I am debating now what I want to do with my reservation, leaning to configuring to a Explore model and then maybe I will get a Rivian in early 2024.

Hello dear Forum members,

I have been following this forum for some time now, and today decided to join. So this is my first post.
It has been 3 years and 4 months since I placed my order for a Rivian R1T.

The only information I have is my delivery window of March / April

I have called / emailed / followed up / asked for escalation / reached out to Rivian employees on LinkedIn / asked a friend who knows some senior VP at Rivian to get more information /

NO LUCK - Can't get a straight answer. It's always the most generic response, which is now doing two things.

ONE - It makes me upset. Yes it does, because they can and should be less vague.
TWO - Should I continue to wait or move on? Will this ever happen.

I'd love to see what do members here think?

Help me - I have options this week to go buy another EV, which are available.

Option 1 - Buy brand new Tesla Model 3 TODAY
Option 2 - Buy brand new VW ID4 TODAY
Option 3 - Keep waiting for this magic to happen from Rivian

Anyone else moved on to another car?
I'm worried if I keep waiting, what if I loose the option for these EVs and Rivian never keeps their promise.

Thanks for help.
I definitely understand the frustration part of it. The lack of answers has a lot of people here upset right now. But I don’t understand giving up when you are this close IF this is the vehicle you want. Based on what we’ve seven, non-employees are starting to get their trucks now and a few others here have said CS confirmed recently they should get their trucks within the original delivery window. So if you want the R1T it *should* happen soon, despite Rivian’s attempts to drive you away LOL

If you don’t really care about whether you get a Rivian, there are other vehicles you could actually get soon that would probably make you just as happy. I wouldn’t buy a Tesla because I hate Musk at this point. The VW is a decent vehicle, but I would much prefer an Ioniq 5 or EV6 over that. You could any of those very quickly if you want, although many of those dealers are trying to get people to pay over MSRP, which is garbage.

Get what you want - you actually have choices now!

Buy the Tesla and VW today.

Buy the RT1 whenever it shows up, and immediately flip it to pay for the cost of the Tesla and VW.

Honestly, regarding Rivian, you're (as many of us) going to have to wait. I'm beating a dead horse at this point, but Rivian is still to new to be able to handle the demands placed on them right now. It's going to be like this for their first year. No amount of $$ will change this. It's their lack of production experience (along with other delays out of their control).

The question you need to ask yourself right now is: Do you need a vehicle now or is it a want a vehicle now? If you need a vehicle, then go for the Tesla model 3 or VW ID4. If it's a want, then tough it up and be ready for a very, Very, VERY patient wait.

Matty J - Thank for sharing the details. Especially your experience in Tesla 3 with fit and finish. I have heard similar from my colleagues here at the bank too.

jdhiker23 - I'll probably still keep my Rivian slot, but if I do decide to give it up, I'll let you know ;)

jjswan33 - Thank you, so you have actually done exactly what I intend to do too.

COdogman - Thank you, so I think the consensus I'm getting is that not to get the Model 3, not just from you, but even my wife doesn't like that car. I hadn't explored the Ionic option, but yes they are trying to sell over MSRP. Ugh...

E.S - Thanks, yes I actually need a vehicle, and instead of getting an IC engine, I'm choosing to get an EV. While I'm OK to wait, just worried about the vagueness and secrecy from Rivian.

Ok, so going to keep my reservation, but go for one of the other EVs for now, so we have a car. Will try to see if I can actually get one at MSRP... and then if and when I get my Rivian, move on.

I was going to suggest a buy an option today, and then when/if Rivian calls, ask to be pushed back in line for a period of time (or buy when they call), although I guess switching to an Explore or Max pack could do the same thing, and then when that time comes, switch it back to Adventure or large. But it may change packages if you are a LE holder. I would think sliding back in line wouldn't bother Rivian much seeing as they have a long line. I don't think I would outright cancel the order either way, just to hedge a bet for a new car in the future, unless you thought Rivian was truly going down hill and didn't want to risk losing $1k.

Yes, do this. I am imagining the instant regret you would feel after clicking the cancel button (so to speak). Then if/ when more and more R1's are driving around over the coming months the regret would just linger.
Hang in there buddy... remember it's the journey...

Option 4. You're in the same position everyone else on the forum is in.

If you go for an EV now consider which EV you pick will get the Federal Tax Credit. That will help on the financial side should you decide to sell it and get the R1T.

BTW I went with the EV6 GT-Line a few weeks ago and it’s a blast. My R1T window is July-September 2022, which will surely slip but when it does happen I will decide then. We may even keep both but if I do sell the EV6 the tax credit will help even things out.

If you are leasing then ignore my suggestion.
