Cooper Discoverer Strongholds or Toyo Open Country AT3 EV? 275/65R20

My 2023 R1S quad with factory 20” wheels and Pirellis is finally coming up on its first new tires. There’s scant usage info on the Coopers and plenty information for the Toyos.

i don’t NEED AT tires or 3 peak mountain snow but I like how they look and occasionally lean into them. I do like the Cooper Strongholds on my Sprinter Van. Replced KO2s with them.

it looks like the coopers weigh significantly more but a limited post commented the driver was getting good range.

the Sprinter is my road trip vehicle. A longish drive in my Rivian would be San Diego to Phoenix or to Central CA.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

Toyo if you care about efficiency, compromising less of it. And if you are using your S mostly on pavement, but still want looks of AT, why fixate on two options from the off-road AT category? You should be looking at tires in the on-road AT category also, which includes the Bridgestone Dueler Ascent in both SL and LT flavors.

Thanks for those tips. The dueler wasnt On my radar. Been a while since I’ve bought tires.

It's at the top of my short list. Very good price too. Even for the tougher LT, which are only 4 lbs heavier than the Scorpion ATs. And you can get some efficiency if you drop down to the smaller 275/60R20 size.

I don't have the Strongholds, but I do have Cooper Discoverer ATP II with 56K miles on them. Just had them rotated yesterday and the service tech said they still had 5-7/32 of tread left and I might be able to make it through 1 more rotation and balance before replacement. I've been rotating them every 6,000 miles. Driven from the Bay Area all the way to Dallas and back through Monument Valley and Canyonlands. Been back and forth to Portland a few times and about to drive up through Washington State to Victoria and Vancouver, BC and back down through Central Oregon next month. No issues with these tires at all. I might stick with these or try out Toyo Open Country A/T III EV's.

FYI, the Bridgestone Ascent in 275/60R20 has load rating of 115. Right under Rivian's specification of of 116. Most tire shops will not install due to liability. Toyos in this smaller size do meet Rivian's specifications and is a XL tire. In this smaller size you also have option of Nitto Terra Grappler G3. But efficiency info is scarce. In this size you even have the factory Goodyear Territory AT RIV as an option. It's efficient but not as aggressive in appearance.

There is most definitely a penalty to be paid. Especially if most driving is not steady highway speeds. Rotational mass increases exponentially with increasing rotational speed. That means even a slight increase in static mass can have great impact once in motion. Physics. Factory 20" AT wheels are about 36 lbs each. Factory 275/65R20 AT tires are 48 lbs each.

Overall, I think I get around 1.7-1.9mi/kWh, but that also includes towing. Looking at some of my recent drives on Rivian Roamer, I've gotten 2.3mi/kWh cruising in conserve mode on the highway. It all depends on how you drive too.
