Did you even read the article you linked? He got nowhere near 500 miles range. I’ll even use the higher 385 miles number in the calc below for you. R2 is a high riding big box, of course it’s not going to be as efficient as something thats a lower to the ground egg. That has nothing to do with efficiency and everything to do with design choice. This is why the Model Y actually has a vastly superior mpge than all 3 bc it’s an egg.

BMW ix3:

109 kWh / 33.7 kWh = 3.2344

385 miles / 3.2344 = 119 mpge

Model Y Juniper AW

75 kWh / 33.7 kWh = 2.226

298 miles / 2.226 = 134 mpge

As I said, design shape is what matters for efficiency at highway speeds. Couldn’t be clearer.

You’re mixing up BMW iX3’s highway only and the Model Y’s combined

Lucid released a minivan in SUV guise and messed up the software. Its not shocking they aren't doing better.
The Gravity is actually doing decently well, given what Lucid put into it. But they spent too much time and resources on the Air.

If they went straight to the Gravity, things might be different now (or at least they’d have more money)

No, I used the real world 70 mph range test from Out of Spec *that i linked in the post* that showed they got 298 miles. I also used the real world iX3 highway range *that you gave to me*. No need for you to continue to double down on a bad take, we’ve all had them before.

My takeaway is that the R2 isn't just "competitive" with the Model Y; it appears to outperform it in many of the areas buyers actually care about. It offers more passenger and cargo space, a smaller exterior footprint, significantly more available power and torque, better off-road capability, and potentially comparable or even better cross-country travel times. On top of that, the Standard RWD undercuts the Model Y Long Range AWD by about $650, while the Premium AWD is only about $4,900 more despite offering substantially more capability.

The impressive part is that Rivian seems to deliver all of this while remaining remarkably efficient. The conversation shouldn't be whether the R2 is "as good as" the Model Y; it should be whether the Model Y can still justify its compromises once the R2 arrives.

So when presented with the irrefutable math you call me a fanboy? A fanboy of Tesla? Or Rivian? I’m struggling to keep up with who I’m an fanboy of. I didn’t even know simple math had Its own fans! 😂

No. What you’ve shown is that the Model Y Juniper actual highway range might be better than their highway epa range. Which would be good for Tesla—if anything, tells me that perhaps Tesla is no longer overstating their actual range.

You haven’t shown that Rivian R2’s actual highway range is better than their highway epa. Instead, you’re just trying to use Tesla’s as a reason to believe it also applies to the R2. Which is why I’m calling you a fanboy.

The only real world 70mph highway range test for the R2 I’ve seen is from State of Charge, who claims in more ideal scenarios, it may do slightly better than its highway epa. Otherwise gets 2.97mi/kwh.

Tesla is doubling down on the suburban mainstream vehicle with the Model YL. R2 will definitely appeal to enthusiasts first and then those that like the boxy look but the price differential will still favor Tesla for awhile. Its also waaaay ahead in autonomy so that will make it the best seller for awhile. I think R2 will eat more of the other OEMs than Tesla actually

You said BMW 70 mph mpge was better than Model Y…I just proved it wasn’t. Never disagreed on R2 70 mph mpge. In fact I agreed and stated as such, noting R2 is a big tall box and won’t be as efficient…

Many people two to three years ago called you that - how the wheel turns! I wouldn’t throw that term around either then or now.

BMW is better, even with the OOS Juniper video:

iX3 at 70mph: 3.8mi/kwh
Juniper at 70mph: 3.6mi/kwh. Screenshot attached from that video

I disagree (and have 2 Teslas presently). Never cared for the MY look, everywhere I go I see “bought this before…”, MY and R2 aren’t even true competitors (Y is just a stretched out 3). With similar pricing, the R2 will absolutely outsell the Y 3 to 1, if they can scale production quickly.

Tesla really messed up with the CT, if they just made a basic SUV they would have done really well, instead Rivian has filled that gap.
