Rivian is using AT&T as a carrier. You don’t need a separate AT&T account.
You’d pay rivian for connectivity, which is utilizing AT&T’s network.
Thanks.

So why does the Rivian app have such limited remote capabilities?

currently rocking commercial plates. The state has been slow as molasses. So
When the exemption happens I just register it under PAS plates.
Cant you take it on Southern State Parkway? I have seen pickup trucks on the S.State with commercial plates in the past.

Rivian has the fabulous scenario of being new and waiting on a NYS government in a delayed state.
Did you get the $2K NY Drive Clean POS rebate off the price of your R1T?

Thanks.. Rob

Because Rivian hasn't written the software to do anything else yet. The app is a work in progress with only a bare minimum set of features.

I think you can but it depends on who wants to pull you over that day.

no did not get the 2k drive clean or even the 500. Rivian is not on the list yet and there is an MSRP requirement as well.

Thanks @Iwantatesla ... guess both things depend on NYS getting their act together

Question of very minor importance, but how's the sound quality of the removable BT speaker? I'l like to be able to pull it at the ramp and bring it with us in the boat for use at the beach. Not looking for blasting bass or volume, but just decent quality with decent fidelity.

I agree they use cellular data. So does Rivian have something like OnStar? Or is a subscription to AT&T required?
Onstar uses AT&T. Pretty much every car company does. Verizon dropped most auto manufacturers back around 2014ish. They didn’t want to be in that market anymore. Almost all vehicles and IoT devices uses AT&T.

@timesinks , @timesinks, @JDMD, and @bowhunter , did any of you have to get commercial plate in your state?
Short answer: no.

Plates and vehicle registration are quite different over here. Our truck still has the IL temp permit on it, and I haven't seen the WA registration yet to know anything for sure. WA uses a different sequence pattern for trucks and pickups of any size than for other types of autos (regardless of weight), but it doesn't mean much. We also don't have class-restricted parkways on the west coast. You may occasionally see a sign like "no trucks over 10,000 GVWR" or similar (I've seen them as low as 6000 for some of SF's steepest hills). But in WA and CA, "trucks" generally implies commercial purposes and a privately driven pickup being used as a passenger vehicle is not going to upset anyone.

In IL and further east, I was always a little confused with my sprinter van where I could and couldn't go. My WA plate and registration say it's a passenger auto, not a truck... ?

Great photos, thanks for doing that.
Mostly my husband's work. I was just following orders to help set up the shots.

Thanks.

So why does the Rivian app have such limited remote capabilities?
It's a minimum viable product right now. I'm sure they will continue to hire more staff and add features. We won't even recognize the current feature list in a year it will have made so much progress. Or at least, that's what I'm hoping.

We played with it briefly and it had a nice wide sound stage, good sound. I think it'll serve your purpose well.

@godfodder0901 @timesinks @JDMD Thanks for offering this public service :like:

I would imagine you guys would cover a lot of the bigger questions (charging, range, efficiency, interior NVH) soon enough, so I will let you guys cover them at your pace.

I do have some questions though,

1. Offline Navigation
How does offline navigation work?
Does it only disable real time information like traffic and maintain the real time navigation when connectivity cuts out?
How does it handle while navigating and connectivity cuts out?
Do you have the option to download maps/navigation data before starting a trip while connectivity is available?

2. Offline Infotainment/Entertainment
How does media streaming applications handle loss of connectivity?
When data connectivity gets disconnected does apps like Spotify lose their stream? Or does it cache the stream of a certain playlist/album and keep playing?
Does the Spotify app in the Rivian allow you to download songs/playlists if you have a Premium Subscription?

3. Bluetooth Quality/Codec/Version
Does the Rivian HW/SW application version state which bluetooth version Rivian has as well as what kind of Audio Codec/Compression it supports while Audio streaming?

If it doesn't and you have a modern Android Phone you can find it out via the Android Developer options. If you are unfamiliar and have an Android Phone,

Enable Developer Options in Android --> Connect to Rivian BT --> Go to Settings --> Developer Options --> Scroll all the way to 'Bluetooth Audio Codec' and that option will activate all the codecs that is supported in that BT connection. You should also see the HD Audio option enabled.

Re:Towing

1)What is the height from the ground to the top of the receiver I'm tow mode?
2) What is the distance from the hole for the hitch pin on the receiver to the end of the bumper?

I want to make sure my weight distributing hitch has enough clearance for the ball and is not too close to the truck. The drive mode video made.me nervous to see the hitch ball so close to the vehicle. It did not look to have much room to make turns in the vehicle.

I recognize these are very random questions. Any help is much appreciated!
Tow mode has standard and low height available. In standard I measured ~21 and 1/8" to the top inside of the hitch receiver. In low it was ~19 and 3/16". Distance from the hitch pin hole to outside bumper edge is roughly 4.25-4.5 inches.

1. I asked the delivery person about this as I'm frequently out of cell range when out in the woods. He said there will be map data offline if you are in the vicinity when you lose connection which didn't really give me much of a sense on how it will perform. I asked about manually pre-loading map data, but there isn't anything for that. I don't see a way to turn off cell data so I can't test it at the moment, but will report back once I have ventured out farther.

2. I don't have premium Spotify so can't report on downloads. As with navigation, will have to wait to report on audio caching behavior when I get out of cell range.

@crashmtb - Thanks for the confirmation and Good question... I've seen them every time Rivian posts a picture or Video.... but yes definitely want to see if they are still there on the delivered trucks. They may not be software activated yet but if they're there I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

@godfodder0901 - These are the LED's @crashmtb is talking about.

Congrats on your deliveries!!

My question:

If you alter a setting in your drive mode setup, do those settings stick and come back between trips? Or does it go back to default?

And does your preferred drive mode (default or custom) stick to your driver profile in the car even after someone else with a different profiles drives it after?

Thanks!!
Yes, they remain.
