Out of curiosity, does this have to be hard-wired? I have an existing 220 in my garage and was told by my Guide that I could just mount it to the wall and plug it in rather than a traditional hard-wire. This doesn’t seem to be the case based on the picture.

I’ve been asking for the same thing since last year due to every electrician in my area being 45-60 days out for scheduling an install. I was told by my Guide that the charger will only ship out just prior to vehicle delivery or at least once the PBA has been sent/signed.

Depends on your local electrical codes. You could, in theory, attach a NEMA 15-50P pigtail to it and plug it in. This generally requires a GFCI if it isn't hardwired or above a certain amperage.

This is the most accurate response. Wiring in a NEMA-50 pigtail is simple, which coupled with a 50A breaker will allow for a 40A configuration on the wall mount charger. GFI will be local code dependent (not required in my municipality).

If you want the max charging rate then you'll need to direct wire and utilize a 60A breaker, which will allow for the max charge rate of 48A. I swapped out my Siemens L2 for the Rivian to gain a much higher charge rate, so I had to upgrade breaker from 50A to 60A and run 6AWG thhn (a whopping 6ft run).

I currently have a Chargepoint Home Flex hardwired with 6AWG on a 60 amp breaker, but now I'm thinking I'd rather switch to a NEMA-50 with 50amp breaker and pigtail the Rivian charger.

48amp=11.5kw/h=25mph=11 hours empty to full
40amp=9.6kw/h=21mph=13 hours empty to full

When am I realistically going to need a full 48 amp? Plus I can use the same NEMA to plug my pumphouse in to the home genset when the power goes out. I have a 100' 220v extension cable (wasn't cheap, but cheaper than buying another generator) that BARELY reaches the dryer plug.

Thoughts?

WA would require a GFI for the socket, and Rivian recommends avoiding using a GFI with the charger. This is the only reason I'm hardwiring.

Hey @godfodder0901 , when you say "Rivian recommends avoiding using a GFI with the charger." are you referring to the hard-wired Rivian charger, or the portable Rivian charger (or both I guess)?

Thanks!

The Wall Charger. It has a built in GFCI and, when not hardwired, the outlet is required to have a GFCI on the circuit (in some/many/most? municipalities). Multiple GFCIs on a single circuit can lead to inadvertent/annoyance trips so Rivian (and most EVSE providers) recommend hardwiring without a GFCI breaker.

Thank you for the post. Can you please confirm if the Rivian Wall Charger requires you to run 6/2 AWG or 6/3 AWG?

Pardon if this has already been asked, but what is the length of the Rivian charger cable?

Good luck. Hope its not too long. (Would appreciate a followup later if you can tell us how long it really takes to get. )

I emailed CS to try to get ahead of this, asking/explaining that I'd like to buy my charger early. The response is pasted below. Not helpful to me, except that I now know this is a question that CS can't/won't answer directly (if we can't buy early, just say so). I need to coordinate charger installation with the new wiring, getting a new submeter from the utility, an inspection, etc, and I'd hoped to do it in one operation, ahead of time, and lock in a lower ev charging rate.
  1. Your Guide will have more information on the timing of your Wall Charger delivery, and I’ve included this note of concern to your account.

Will post when I get the charger. Trying to get a quote today. Wonder if they can do most of the work prior to receiving the charger. The truck will be a weekend/evening vehicle for me anyways. If I take it to my business my employees will all want raises the same day.
