First off, thanks for EVERYONE chiming in and answering all of these questions for the community. So excited!!!

I'm waffling on the type of charging to setup in my garage. One option, install a NEMA 14-50 plug on a 50 amp circuit breaker and start out by using the Rivian Portable Charger (I don't drive much, so that should be more than enough for my needs). The other option is the Rivian Wall Charger hard-wired on a 60 amp circuit breaker.

A couple of questions for owners:
1) what are you using now and how's it working? Any challenges?
2) if you're using the Rivian Portable Charger with the NEMA 14-50 plug - are you having any issues with the GFIC circuit breaker tripping (one concern I have)?
3) regardless of your current charging method, can you specify the rate of charge through the app?

Many thanks!!
1) 120V with portable charger getting 2 kw/hr if that. I think you'll find putting the portable charger back in the bag to get harder to do over time. I'm on day 3 of ownership and curling it back up is getting old.

Will you feel comfortable leaving your car without the portable charger and how much are you willing to pay for convenience?

I went low-tech and used a strip of brightly colored duct tape. I do this for all my cars and it allows me to know exactly when to stop. my old car only showed the cam when in reverse but Rivian is nice as I can switch to rear cam as I drive in and then I know when to stop.
Be careful with ride height as that will change the distance...

If anyone traded in a vehicle with Rivian when they bought, how did you disclose any issues with your existing vehicle? I have a 2013 Model S I will likely trade in (at least get a quote for) and it has a few issues that I want to disclose for honesty's sake. I've never done an online trade in before so I am not sure how this is done. Thanks.

Can someone tell me what is a part of driver profile? In other words when me and my wife switch drivers, what settings change? Seat position, mirrors, vent direction, temp,…….?

From the UI, the only saved settings are seat position, mirrors, and steering wheel position.

Do you mind sharing more @r1vlife? I'm new to EV's so I may be missing something:
- why can't I just leave the portable charger plugged in inside my garage?
- why wouldn't I feel comfortable leaving my car without the portable charge? If I'm away from home, won't I (generally) want to charge at a charging station? That won't require the portable charger will it?

Thanks!!

It's great they have at least that, but I hope they get more driving preferences and some of the UI adjustments mixed in there. Obviously the main driving modes can't switch automatically (or, at least, it should ask first), but I really like how much of the UI layout & driving profile is attached to each user on the Tesla. My wife and I drive quite a bit differently.

You can leave it plugged in. I think about the case where the charging station is down and maybe I'll need to visit an RV park and use their 240V outlets to charge, hence why I personally will carry the portable charger all the time, just in case I forget. (Yes I am extremely cautious)

I have a Nema 14-50, currently using a Chargepoint Home Flex. I also have a cheaper 14-50 I bought on Amazon that is 40A. The Rivian charger gives 32A with a Nema 14-50.

If for example you average 50 miles a day, also the 32A charger included will give you 32A * 240V = 7.6 kW

With 50 miles if you can average 2 mi/kWH of battery (could be more depending on tires and driving style) those 50 miles of daily travel will use 25 kWH

At 7.6 kW charging rate (from the Rivian charger) it would require 3-4 hours of charging a day.

100 miles a day = ~6-8 hours of charging a day

Hope that helps.

I'm parked in a 225 inch long garage and it's a crazy squeeze...the tow hooks stick out in the front but it doesn't eclipse the nose of the truck by much. As far as the back is considered the rear bumper is the one that sticks out.

You're going to need to modulate the reverse and apply steady pressure until you get where you need to be. I don't recommend stopping at all because vehicle hold will kick in and you'll lose more fine grained control (your chance of smacking into the wall becomes much higher since it will lurch backwards). If you do stop and you're 4 inches or less shy I would pull forward and reverse until you make it.

Thanks for posting this. This is the length of my garage. I was hoping there would be a bit more usable space. This is why I haven’t ran the wire to the EVSE, may need to rethink my strategy and put it outside which would be a disappointment.

Or get my wife on board with the second garage/outdoor kitchen/pool house concept I had envisioned…

Even with the squeeze I think you should still garage it. You can plug it in before closing the garage door if the charger would be in an inaccessible spot!

That is definitely plan A. Having never owned an EV I am worried about not having the ability to ride the brakes and creep until in the perfect spot. Very worried about having to hit the go pedal and with that much power parking it through the wall.

I'm also a first time ev owner and with regen set to max, I've been getting used to feathering the accelerator to creep back. If you don't make it the first time just creep forward and back it again...or use the blocks everyone has suggested!
