It's wild because this is almost the complete opposite of what happens at a dealership (at least when you finance). You do your down payment, get loan approval, and drive off - at some point unbeknownst to you your lender gets them their funds. But you definitely have the car before they have all their cash.
This might have been true two years ago. Dealers regularly get customers to purchase a vehicle sight unseen for high demand vehicles. I signed a purchase agreement on my last car and had to wait two weeks for it to be delivered from the factory. Vehicle was built, had a VIN and I was even able to see the Monroney sticker. Of course, I could have refused delivery and gotten the (credit card) down payment back.

So, full payment is expected before delivery can even be scheduled? I thought I read somewhere that one can pay with a bank check (or other cash equivalent) when picking up the vehicle at Tesla. Does Rivian not allow that? Well, may be Tesla no longer allows that too.

Seems to be to many reports of people completing the 8 steps then delivery getting canceled. Rivian needs to update the process and ensure that the local service center has completed the inspection before having customer start 8-steps.
I was told by my guide on Monday that is what they are now doing. I guess not.

My guide mentioned they're starting 8 steps sooner to give more time for people to complete it. Step 8 - scheduling delivery should stay locked until inspection is complete. Just my opinion.

Man I try not to be a dick on these forums but you guys come off like a bunch of Karens. A free 1 week loan? Give me a break.
I paid for a Livewire One over two weeks ago and it hasn't been delivered to the dealer yet. Just gotta have patience.

Not a bad point but they should also consider not allowing payment until payment inspection is complete. I know in 2025 when I'm finally up for delivery I will ask guide to verify service center inspection is complete before I make payment.

fair point as well....i'm holding off on payment and insurance steps until i have a better idea on when it'll be delivered. My guide also said that making payment isnt necessary until then as well...

Nope, I had my delivery scheduled before I sent payment or got insurance.

Just paid for my R1T today in the greater Sacramento area, so we shall see how long before I take delivery. It's hard to imagine they'd unlock and take my payment much ahead of delivery, but my official window is pretty far out.

Yea it’s very poorly executed right now. from sending me paperwork, me filling it out, paying for the truck, hours later they Cancel my delivery, now no idea when I’ll get the truck, to an email today telling me to expect the paperwork very soon to finish the process. Uh, I’ve already done the paperwork. The. Only delay is on their part as I need the VIN # to add it to my insurance. Until that happens, they can just say my paperwork isn’t completed. Round and round we go.

Sorry, That''s odd. They got me the vin right away, and I can see it when I click vehicle overview.

Just updating my mild thread hijacking here: Paid for the Truck Thurs, Scheduled to pick up from West Sacramento center Mon, but they called me in early and delivered Saturday, of a total turnaround from payment step of about 48 hours. I have no idea how I was selected other than sheer luck.

Happy for you SkyBo! Glad to see deliveries coming out of the Sac area.

I'm in same boat as OP... Had signed PBA from early April. Told our truck made it to Sacramento 5/2 but going through final inspection. 8 steps opened Wed 5/4 which we completed and sent wire. Guide got us scheduled delivery for 5/5 but then had to cancel an hour later as something found on "pre-delivery inspection". Wouldn't be a big deal except guide lead us to believe the 8 steps wouldn't open until after it has passed all inspections (apparently something catastrophic was missed in both Illinois and the initial SC inspection, guide doesn't know specifics). Our guide initially made a big deal about how they could not let us know much about progress such as when it went into production or left Illinois as they didn't want to get our hopes up if it failed an inspection.... That plan failed. Our vin was in the 3xxx range.

Before this week communications with guide often ended with "I'm looking daily to get you matched" but now they have escalated our search to really try to match is... Whatever that means... Kinda reminds me of the joke, "How does Superman fly faster?"

Sac had roughly 20-30 trucks awaiting pickup in various stages. There was one there that had some of the front pulled off, sounded like it may have been damaged in transit. I didn't see that one, but my wife mentioned it, as she was wandering around while I was going through the handover. Maybe you were that unlucky one, but I hope you get your truck soon.
