Just wanted to follow up that after sending some emails, Rivian management including RJ did respond and are taking care of my registration. To their credit they acknowledged some issues they are working through and mentioned they are focusing company resources on fixing this for everyone. I do feel like they will eventually nail down this process.

There is no evidence that Rivian started the process of getting plates. That's what pisses me off. They had 90 days to figure it out.
I was frustrated about this too. Why did it take 90 days for customer service to send this email?

Now I wonder if there is a significance to the fact that it took 90 days to react to this slow moving train wreck, such as some contractual language between Rivian and RegUSA prohibiting Rivian from taking any action within the first 90 days.

If that were true, this would all make a lot more sense.

Not making excuses for Rivian as this is a huge miss. Just trying to understand it.

Have you, or anyone else with expired tags, tried being proactive at your DMV/DOL/SOS to get a new temp tag/plate?
Yes, but unable to register it in my state without specific documents from Rivian.

Yeah, this is why I hesitate to self-register. Is Rivian competent enough to provide me ALL of my state’s required documentation to make the self-registration “seamless”?
This is a good point. It would probably be a good idea to find out what documents are required in your state and county to title and register your R1.

Keep in mind that there are likely many different combinations of documents unique to the requirements of thousands of different municipalities. This is probably why Rivian hired RegUSA to provide this service, which seems to have been a big failure. Now Rivian will attempt to make up for it by sending you the documents you need to register it yourself.

I don't know about you, but I plan to provide specific instructions to my guide so that I won't be disappointed again if they send incorrect or incomplete documentation.

It's basically the same thing in every state:
-MCO (Rivian's has a federal odometer disclosure on the back)
-Federal odometer disclosure
-proof of insurance
-driver's license
-Bill of sale
-whatever your state registration form is
-other state specific things

So all Rivian needs to get you is MCO and bill of sale. Some folks like me doing multi-state transactions also get the Illinois ST-556 to prove sales tax paid.

Also, sorry not sorry for being judgey, if you can afford an $80k+ truck but not figure out how to register it, there's a different conversation needing had. Just ask Chief Petty Officer Google "how to self register in [YOUR STATE HERE]" or visit your DOL/DMV/SOS and ask... Politely.

FWIW, my registration experience in Maine has been pretty good. Got the truck about 6 weeks ago, got a call from my town office yesterday saying my registration was ready and I just need to come in to pick up plates. (They recommended that I do it next week so they’re July expiration instead of June)
Likewise. No issues in California. Have my plates and title within a few weeks.

Sorry for those having issues - I would be totally frustrated too - it is running smoothly in some cases though.

Dumb guy question, but during those weeks/months that you are in limbo on the paperwork, would you be unable to legally sell the vehicle if you needed to?

Correct, won't be able to sell the car. Unless buyer doesn't know what they're doing!

Hence the theories circulating on the interweb that this all was intentional and intended to curb some of the R1T flipping.

Not sure I buy it though because Rivian has not demonstrated for me much consistency in being able to coordinate relatively simple tasks let alone an interstate conspiracy.

Wondering why they can't just provide a new temporary? In the past, I've gotten extended temporary registration on the rare occasions when the registration didn't get processed in time. Would think it should be easy enough to do. And would think Rivian would work with DMV to do so, rather than telling people they can't drive their vehicle and drive a rental instead.

Very odd.

I don’t understand why they can’t get this handled on their own. My local DMV’s are train wrecks and if I’m lucky I’ll get this done in a day. They should refund the destination fee just for having to endure this annoyance. Still don’t get why they can’t get this done on their own. In my state (and most and most states) they could deal with a single location for an entire state and push all registrations they even get special access. That’s that Mecum/Barret Jackson do and I mention them because they probably do the same volume as Rivian right now.

That’s a meritless conspiracy theory and btw, didn’t seem to work at all.

looks like they pushed most temps through Illinois. Not sure of their laws but I agree you’d think they could get a special exception if nothing else for a 90-day extension.

My second temp tag came from my home state so I’m guessing that IL won’t allow an extension if vehicle is no longer in the state.

Interesting. Makes sense. My state does a max of 30 days afaik.
