This is my first purchase of a rooftop tent for a vehicle and I am just curious as I like the 23Zero Products, especially their New ARMADILLO X Hard Shell 62' Length - Dimensions Closed (Exterior): 48” (W) x 62” (L) x 14” (H).

Anyways, with the Rivian bed being 54' in length - What would be a suggested rooftop purchase if I wanted to go with something different than their proprietary Yakima Skyrise HD (Closed -58 in L x 49 in W x 17 in H). releasing later in the year.

How much overhang is suggested if a larger tent?

Appreciate the feedback in advance!

There was a person who posted photos of the Roofnest Condor XL that sticks out like 10" off the back of the truck, they said it worked fine. I'm not sure I'd trust it long term though, that seems like it's a lot of extra torsion on the bars.

I looked at a 3-person RTT that someone was selling locally and it had similar dimensions to the Armadillo. I didn't like the fact that it would stick out a minimum of 12-16" aft of the tailgate once you accounted for enough room away from the rear window. I found a used Yakima Skyrise locally and it fits perfectly, I was able to get it immediately and I saved about $500. If you're on Facebook, I would check some local resale groups and it's possible you could see the RTTs in person prior to making a decision.

If you keep the same closed dimensions it should be tent preference essentially. Though some tents may require some enginuity (?) to use the cross bars.

Generally speaking people seem to really like skycamp mini, the roofnest condor (not xl) should work. On the lower end of things the smittybuilt overland should also work. Each of these manufacturers has a couple of other that should work too. As does Crua and Cascadia tents.

Generally speaking avoid XL tents and wedge tents, and then check the dimensions.

Yeah that’s a bit much for sure

Also, spend some time looking through some owner experiences or reviews of tents. There are some details that I found in a few thar steered me away from a a model or two personally.

The biggest choice is probably hard vs soft top.

We love it! It’s light enough for my wife and I to load over the truck bed and spacious enough for 2. Fast and easy setup. I ended up buying a set of Thule RTT mounts ($~100) to replace the original Yakima ones simply because the Rivian crossbars are wider than most and the Thule mounts fit perfectly.

I've been searching for an alternative to the Yakima SkyRise HD because I'm growing impatient waiting for Yakima to release it. I've found that the Yakima HD will give you the largest tent you can fit properly on the short R1T bed.
Yakima HD: 96" x 56"
iKamper X-Cover 2.0 mini: 81" x 51".
iKamper Skycamp 3.0 mini: 83" x 52".

I guess I'll continue waiting for the Yakima HD for now....

I got the Ironman 4x4 Nomad 1300 ABS shell tent, fits 2 people very comfortably.
I think the size/proportions are just about perfect to go on the bars over the bed.

Website has/had a 20% discount running in July. I scored 25% off during 4th holiday

Note: tent open photos taken before I flipped it "backwards" for my own reasons

Here is the 23Zero Armadillo X on the back of my truck. I haven’t used it yet, but it seems nice and it goes up and packs away fast. I’ll do a review of it later, but I’ve been moving.

Looking forward to seeing this setup on your R1T. I watched some video reviews of it from Overland West on YouTube and the Armadillo X looks like a great RTT. If you get a chance can you take a pic looking directly at your truck from the side? I'm interested in how much it overhangs the tailgate when closed up. Thanks!
