Ok, I don’t get it. I live in SoCal. We own a house, have two kids, and make nowhere near $300k.
I guess we don’t splurge… except for the Rivian.
Ignore it. When someone makes blanket statements like that you just know they have no clue what life is like outside their respective bubble.

I asked my guide this very thing... I don't have a signed PBA for my R1S yet, but I would sign one if it meant securing the credit before my 1H2023 delivery estimate.
Heck, I am willing to pay in full upfront in 2022 to lock in the tax credit!

As September 21 preorder, I'm really pulling for you to take delivery this year. I hope I can be right behind you. If this bill passes, I hope that Rivian will let anyone with a late 22 delivery window the opportunity to sign purchase agreement before the year is out so we can still get the tax rebate.
Don’t count on it.

You are confounding pandemic induced supply constraints with market demand directed supply constraints.

Go to a GM dealer and ask for a Chevy Bolt. You will leave the dealership with one the same day.
$5K markup included?

Definitely a psychological bummer for us as our R1S was initially estimated to be here by the end of the year and we will now lose out on the 7.5k credit due to being just over salary cap (yeah, I know not exactly the worst problem one could have).

Need to try to convince some friends of mine holding out for a max pack R1T to instead try and snag a large pack this year as the max pack will now be costing them 17.5k.

You don't need chargers everywhere there are gas stations. The vast majority of people will charge at home
Does this “vast majority of people” you’re envisioning all own single family homes with garages/driveways and have the means to have an EVSE installed on their property?

Because I’m not sure if that’s “the vast majority of people” today.

R1S on order
Currently demand is clearly and significantly outstripping supply. Why are so many of you denying this reality?
Current demand for Rivians is with a blanket $7500 credit with no limitations.

Demand for Rivian with a limited tax credit is unknown.

Yeah, Google says 65% of families own homes. That certainly is not the "vast majority" of potential EV buyers.

Indeed, and every “home” has a garage or driveway. Problem solved, then.

I’m wondering if the $1000 pre-order is a "written binding contract to purchase"…. If so, then all of us may make it under the wire.

I’m also wondering about the definition of MSRP. I recall lots of pixels dedicated to the ideation last year. In the end I wasn’t ever sure whether certain options counted against MSRP or not (Max Pack, Color, Wheels, Trim, Accessories).

That would be great.

Unfortunately no. Here’s the text.

1. No Obligations

Each Preorder you submit for a Vehicle acts as a deposit for a future purchase of the Vehicle. You are under no obligation to purchase a Vehicle from us, and we are under no obligation to supply you with a Vehicle.

These Terms do not constitute an agreement for the sale of a Vehicle and do not lock in pricing, a firm production slot, a firm delivery date, or specific Vehicle configuration. To complete the purchase or lease of a Vehicle, you will need to execute Rivian’s standard final Rivian Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement (“Final Sales Agreement”) which will include additional terms and conditions, including the final price sheet for the vehicle you ultimately select (“Your Selected Vehicle”). The Final Sales Agreement may be made with another Rivian entity. Additional payment for Your Selected Vehicle, including taxes and other governmental fees, will be required at that time.

We may decline Preorders to avoid over-subscription or as we deem appropriate in our sole discretion. If your Preorder is declined, you will be notified and your Preorder payment will be refunded.

My comment was EVs broadly, but Tesla can’t meet demand without the credit. Rivian raised prices 20% and their backlog continues to grow.

Anyone else with an R1S on order considering a switch to an R1T if this passes? I prefer the look of the R1S and the functionality of the additional covered storage (so does my wife), but we don't have a real need for it or the 3rd row. I've seen many R1Ts delivered here in CO to preorder dates after mine (9/21) so figure I might be able to get it before end of year if I switch. I do fear the inevitable problems that come with the powered tonneau cover but having a tough time justifying an extra $10k+ for the R1S.
Yes - thinking exactly this. I don't really need the 3 rows of the SUV, but had really wanted the back area (air conditioned!) for our dogs. Since it's been 3.5 years since I put down my deposit, our dogs passed...and we have a new dog...and I've transitioned to one of those second row hammocks so she can ride closer to me/us. So I could make a truck work, particularly with a $7,500 incentive. Still worried about that tonneau though.
