My advice to Explore pre-order holders who don't want to upgrade to Adventure is this: upgrade anyway, flip your vehicle on the open market for a profit, and bank that for a new R2 reservation that will be at or under the outgoing R1 Explore price.
Yeah this is my backup plan if I'm unable to really afford the vehicle when it comes time to purchase.

Complete speculation here, but my guess is they'll keep everything Quad Motor/Adventure through 2023 at least. It will keep the margins up and the production complexity down.

Once they hit enough sales volume with this configuration, I'd guess they'll figure out a way to get a lower priced version out the door. This might be a combined dual-motor/Explore type configuration in 2024 or 2025. That would still keep the amount of configurations down.

I'm sure this is something Rivian hasn't made any decisions on yet, so who knows how it will actually turn out. But I think everyone is coming to the realization that Rivian offered way too many configurations to be practical to manufacture.
Yeah honestly they should just cancel the dual motor R1 and focus on that for the R2 only.

Also helps with model differentiation long term, knowing all of the original R1's are quad, which I'd argue helps Rivian as a brand.

I am an Explore trim reservation holder that made the switch to the Adventure trim after receiving the official email. I agree it's not a price increase even though the upgrades are certainly not worth it for me (why else would I have ordered the Explore trim and agreed to a later delivery date?). My only hope is my spot in the production queue is now "restored" to where I would have been had I ordered the Adventure trim all along.

You can hope, and I imagine some will get lucky, but, from the email..

"Please note that switching to Adventure will not automatically result in an earlier delivery window."

Rivian could have been the Subaru of BEV trucks by sticking with Quad Motors on every model they sell.

I am not looking for an "earlier" delivery window. I am just trying to get my "original" delivery window back! ;) That's the least Rivian can do for another batch of frustrated early reservation holders.

PS: I think someone mentioned this already, but I won't be surprised if those holding a reservation for max pack might end up with the same fate.

Yes, totally agree. Definitely some variability in supply cost for wood/paint/etc. But it could also be cheap on the supply side and "niche" (aka expensive) on the demand side.

LA Silver, to your point, is extremely sparkly and flaky, yet it's "free". Limestone is a flat (nardo) grey -- yet costs (the consumer) more, while probably costing (the manufacturer) less. Silver used to be the #1 most popular color in the US (like 25% of all cars) and also one of the least risky for the OEM to offer.

The other buried cost is not just the raw materials but the costs incurred on the line. The more rare the thing, typically the most costly to make manufacture due to limiting the size of the line runs and the changeovers required.
Not to be argumentative but limestone isn’t flat. It’s actually a metallic which is why it can look blue, gray, green or a combination of those colors depending on the lighting and surroundings it’s viewed in.

I didn't sign a BPA last week because my R1S preorder was sub $80K... until today.
Question: What price is used by the IRS for the purpose of the new $80k limit? Is it vehicle, or vehicle+destination, or vehicle+destination+taxes?
I've reconfigured with a new paint color and removed a number of options that I guess I'll buy aftermarket. But if destination and taxes are included in the price test, I still have problems.
I think I can answer my own question. It appears that the price cap is based on MSRP, which includes destination charge but not taxes. Because Rivian is now charging a $1500 destination fee, my upper limit on the vehicle package is $78,500 to still get the rebate.
I think if I use Walmart shopping bags instead of the All-Weather floor mats, I can squeak by. ?

Becoming more and more like Tesla. Already started off following their playbook. Now following the later paths as well.

I remember the days when I ordered my first three Tesla's, being able to pick and choose my interior configurations, dark headliner, light seats, my choice of dash materials, sunroof, premium sound, etc, etc, etc. By the time I got my 2019, pretty much the only options were color and wheels. Spending this kind of money, should have the option to make it the way you want it. Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and most all the others, you can personalize the vehicles to your preferences. Now, Tesla, Rivian apparently headed the same direction, will basically give you what they give you. Right now, they have more demand than supply, so it won't change any time in the near future. But some day, supply will catch up with demand and competitors will come and buyers will start choosing what's most appealing to them, rather than one of the two vehicles available. At that point, we'll see Tesla and Rivian start to make more customer friendly changes.

Not a knock on the company. I'm happy with my Truck. Just saying, choices aren't a bad thing. In the meantime, I understand they need to simplify what they can to try and get trucks out the door.

So, with no other packages, why call the Adventure a package? It's just an R1S now in my case.

Ok but It ain't LA silver, which looks like a disco ball by comparison.

Oh, yeah. What was I thinking? Guess I had a brain fart ? Now, I can go back to just being pissed that I’m being forced into the Adventure pkg., that includes a bunch of stuff I don’t need.
Start piling up accessories...that u may never actually get
