I'm a 2/14/19 reservation holder for R1S, LE, ECG, BM, UB shield, 22" sport bright.

My updated delivery window is August-September and received first guide contact and email to lock configuration on 8/30... after doing so, received 8 step email on same day.

My guide told me on 9/2 that my S was at service center in Mpls.

On 9/6, was told that Step 8 (schedule delivery) was likely to open in next couple of days. That still hasn't happened. On a whim, I decided to stop by the service center on Saturday and see if it was in the parking lot. They had around 10 T's (one with OC interior) and 5 S's in the lot, but not mine.

While I was wandering around the lot, an employee walked out of the building and immediately struck up a conversation and asked if I had a truck on order. I told him my S was supposed to be at the service center going through PDI. After chatting about my configuration, he said they had it inside and had just started PDI and detailing process. He let me in to the building to check it out and gave me a bit of an overview and allowed me to crawl around inside. We had a nice conversation about a whole bunch of different things, which lasted over 30 minutes. The guys there were great and you can tell they're very passionate about what they do.

I asked him about ability to purchase an extra set of 20" wheels with ATs as I won't be comfortable with the 22s in MN winter. He indicated that we will ultimately be able to purchase through the gear shop, but can buy from the service center in the meantime. He noted that one of the employees had 22s on his R1T, which worked fine during our MN winter last year - he said the traction control works amazing to provide traction on snow and ice. He encouraged me to wait and try the 22s out before purchasing a set of the 20s for winter. I told him I would very likely still get the 20s for better braking performance on snow and ice as compared to the 22s.

All told - spent about an hour at the service center... so glad that I went. Hope to take delivery later this week.

Sweet, I've met half those guys too. Cool cats. I've been to that location so many times drooling over trucks haha. I don't suppose he mentioned the costs of the 20's? And same....they told me 22's were pretty good in the winter. Based on the tread pattern comparison of the 21s and 22s, the 22s look much better. Much more siping (spelling?), and softer compound will be perfect.

The anthracite 20's were around $1,200 per wheel/tire, so ~$4,800 for full set

I assume by anthracite you mean the standard forged AT 20’s with the “five floating staples”? And $1200 per wheel not including Pirelli AT tire?

With respect to wheels, yes, my reference to anthracite is to the 20” all terrains with the floating staple look you describe (See below). The $1,200 cost is for each wheel and tire combo, so 4 wheels and 4 tires total $4,800.

Thank you. Interesting. So seeing how the Pirelli AT's are about $400 each on TireRack, that nets about $800 per wheel. Thanks again for posting your conversation with them.

Yeah - I was actually pleasantly surprised by the pricing. As you note, the Pirellis are $400 each, so $800 per wheel seemed pretty reasonable given lack of other options.

I was at that SC over the Labor Day weekend. Looks like they are doing _a lot_ for such a physically small SC. That lot was full of trucks and it looked like they had several more parked inside.

Congratulations on the R1S and thanks for the information on the 20" wheel/tire combination. I plan to "try out" the 22" combination but have reservations. I have used a 2nd set of dedicated winter wheels and tires on every DD for 20 years now. I do emergency medicine work and getting stuck just is not an acceptable option.

That's actually quite reasonable...

Given that the service centers were selling the 21" wheel caps for more than what the gear shop ended up selling them for, I wonder if the gear shop version would be cheaper. I think it's highly unlikely, but just speculative curiosity.

I’m with you - have winter wheels/tires on all my daily drivers… even if Rivian traction control can work magic accelerating on snow and ice, it’s can’t do anything to help with braking, which is even more important from a safety perspective. So, I’m going to get the 20” ATs for winter.
