Same truck, higher resale value.
Do you anticipate more than a $7500 difference in resale? That may depend on how long you anticipate keeping the truck (as well as all of the EV tax credit variables at play).

Rivian has delayed my delivery for almost 4 years. So, no, I won't be adding to my pain.

Waiting might yield a better quality truck as Rivian continues to make quality control improvements which might lead to slightly better resale value but I don't think model year really makes much difference in the long run. Resale value will be far more affected by miles, battery condition and vehicle condition that 2022 vs 2023. Like Tesla Models features will be probably be rolled out continually with many through software updates. I can't see any major model updates for many years as they focus on improving their manufacturing process and rolling out the dual motor models.

Personally, I'll take a vehicle when offered because I want to a Rivian and its capabilities - a family hauler than can tow, off-road and accelerate with cheap energy costs all packaged in a nice interior. If I was worried about resale value and total costs I would skip an EV and buy a quality ICE vehicle for a lot less money. Keep in mind I bought a '15 Model S with 70K miles for less than 50% of what it cost new. While the last few years have been anomalous with used car prices soaring, they are going to return to historical rates of depreciation. Most EVs will continue to hold relatively good resale value, but as production ramps and as EVs hit the market in volume EV depreciation will start to catch up to ICE depreciation.

If you keep your car more than 8 years or so it's not going to matter if it's a 2022 or 2023 model year. That really only applies if you are dumping a car in the first few years.
I suspect many here are "car guys" by looking at the vehicles they own under their profile. It's not uncommon for car guys to get bored with vehicles sooner rather than later and sell when the itch becomes a rash. On average I keep cars under 3yrs, so for me... if I can game the system when the stars align to get that next model year on the Title I'll try.

Hello all. I received contact from my Guide last week stating that they matched my R1T configuration and to get ready to start the 8-step purchase process. It sounded like the truck was already built and awaiting shipment.

With only 10-weeks remaining in the year I decided to delay my purchase and wait for a 2023 R1T. I ordered mine on 2/5/21 so I figured a few more months will be worth the wait.

My Guide said no problem and made some notes under my account. I configured the OC interior and also decided to wait for the new vegan dash option as well.

Is anybody else in the same boat?
No, I absolutely wouldn't be doing that given the chance. The price difference will be minimal as there have not been major updates to the design/interior/etc.

I agree. While if it was just a couple of months and I was in control of the delay process, sure - makes sense. But with all the unknowns and the high likelihood of Rivian saying "nope, you just lost your price protection" I wouldn't make that move. Rivian will be under no obligation to hold the pre-hike pricing beyond the time your truck is ready, nor should they. Otherwise I'd wait for the 2024 at the same price :)
I have a plan B if Rivian pulls a fast one on pricing. I also have early reservations for a Canoo pickup, Canoo van, and 3 Cybertrucks.

Wow.. I can't imagine taking such a big risk on the EV tax credit for an arbitrary build date. You're potentially throwing away a decent chunk of change. PBA potentially means nothing.

I took delivery of a Ford Lightning this year that I am flipping. I will take that federal tax credit when doing my taxes next year.

That doesn't prevent you from also taking the credit for a 2022 Rivian when you file (unless you have considerably less than $15k tax liability).

Did you sign the binding purchase agreement? If so you should still be fine in 2023.

Makes sense, but it seems like it would be per vehicle not per household.

Unfortunately the PBA isn't some legally binding document. It's really up to how the IRS will handle it. Some tax pros on reddit have argued it's worthless. I guess either way we can hope the batteries are assembled in the USA and we get ~$3600.

"Some tax pros on reddit" is far from definitive. I'm not discounting the potential for it to be deemed inadequate, but I wouldn't write it off yet.

Right.... not at all. Only saying there's still a bit of risk.

From the looks of some serious investment in vehicles, I don't think maximizing the tax savings is the #1 priority. Will be one heckuva garage to tour!
