Am I the only one who didn’t want/care about a cover?
Yes, you are the only one in the world who didn't want/care about a cover.

Rivian service called me this afternoon to go over my five service tickets. When they got to the Tonneau cover they said they have a few designs in testing now - to see which is best. They expect to start replacing ticketed ones for delivered trucks in 1Q, he told me. I didn’t even ask, it was all volunteered, proactively. Who knows though… I also got in line for whatever the front half shaft “tocking” and dislocating redesign solution may be.

I want the tonneau cover to outlast the truck, not the other way around...
Be careful what you wish for.

Whether in 2 months, 2 years, or 2 decades, and automatic or manual, I’d much rather have a working truck with a broken tonneau than a broken truck with a working tonneau. I can still do truck things with a broken tonneau but with the broken truck I guess I could repeatedly open and close the tonneau, marveling at how well built it is as the broken truck sits in my driveway or garage. Yay?

The resale value of a working truck with a broken tonneau should be way higher than the other way around, too. So, yeah, I’d rather the vehicle outlast the accessory.

I think a lot of us didn't care - but I know in my case I optioned it because it felt like the only way to sneak a delivery in 2022 for the tax credit. The option effectively has a negative cost if it made the difference between me getting a truck or not.

Although now that I have it, if it breaks and they just rip it out I'd at least want to see the option refunded, I have a feeling there's no way they're going to have a working redesign with the constraints of the original packaging.

That said, mine still works and sounds pretty healthy, if they are actually able to retrofit something that works for people that'd be neat, I do like being able to have covered storage in the bed for a variety of reasons.

What's funny about all this is I never wanted the power tonneau cover. I added it to get my car delivered earlier. Now that it's being taken away and I've seen how it works, I don't want the truck without the powered version!

I've read this entire thread, and just want to be clear. If I want the powered version, my only option is to wait because the no cover or manual cover options CANNOT be retrofitted, correct? Has that been confirmed?

If so....decisions, decisions!
I didn’t really see an option to wait in the email that was sent. The option was choose a truck with either manual or no cover. Whether you can delay the truck would be a question for CS, but I’d be worried they may stop honoring pre march pricing at some point for those who choose to delay delivery.

CS chat told me my Feb 2022 order is likely a 2H2023 delivery so the new tonneau should be out by then. Phew.

If you think about it, what OP means is he/she wants the tonneau cover to work as long as the truck is working, that's what "outlast" really means in this case. We all would want the same thing, don't we?

If the tonneau sill works at least you can get the things out of your broken truck when they send it to the scrapyard.

What are the symptoms of this issue?

If you search the forums for the words “tocking” and “half shaft” you will find a ton. In short, you hear a clanking noise when se tarting off from, or coming to, a stop under light pedal. Loose/worn half shaft stems and CV joints up by the front two motors.

I thought the meaning of what they wrote was clear, even though there was probably a lot of frustration that went into it, “I want the tonneau cover to outlast the truck, not the other way around...”

I can TOTALLY understand wanting the tonneau cover to last at least as long as the truck. I think all of us would say that the ideal situation is for everything to work for as long as we own the truck: from the drivetrain down to the flashlight. I don’t understand putting into words the concept of specifically NOT wanting the truck to outlast the tonneau.

Look at it this way: If the truck is in-warranty I think almost everyone would say, “I’d rather be able to drive my truck until I can get the tonneau fixed.” And very few people would say, “I’d rather have my truck at a Service Center because I can’t drive it but at least the tonneau still works.”

If the truck is scrap but works well enough that it has power to operate accessories, can unlock, and responds to the button or touchscreen but the tonneau is broken then hopefully the tailgate would still open so my things can be pulled out the back.

If my truck is scrap and neither the tonneau nor the tailgate work then I’m pretty sure a crowbar or similar will make short work of the tonneau since I won‘t care what I damage at that point.

This is exactly what I meant. I want something that will last, without question. Its crazy to think that these powered tonneaus are failing so early. I plan on having this truck at least 5 years. A manual tonneau will easily last that long.
