Smart Watch as a Key?

Deleted member 7028

Does anyone know if there any plans to add the Rivian App to smart watches so they can be assigned as a "key"?

Or alternatively, is there any way to add the RFID key to a watch? I key through my RFID scanner at work using my Apple Watch, so it seems reasonable that the capability exists. Does anyone know if there's anything special about the NFC/RFID protocols of the key card or wristband that prevent the use of a smartwatch as an RFID key?

That would be awesome if they allowed this, but I don’t think they would since it would probably lower sales for their wristband.

the wristband isn't available except as a gift for launch edition preorders, as far as I know. Am I missing something?
It should be available in the Gear Shop at some point s00n....

I have Apple HomeKey for my home, and let me tell you, using a watch to unlock the doors is great. I'd really appreciate a similar experience for Rivian.

I was thinking about this yesterday actually - with the release of Matter, and Rivian's OS being built on-top of Android Automotive, it would be cool to see some sort of home automation ecosystem integration.

I saw a video a couple years ago of someone using some solvent to dissolve the Tesla key card to reveal the electronics. It was basically a tiny chip attached to a loop of wire. Once removed, it could be put just about anywhere. I think someone put it under their skin so that could use their hand to unlock there car. On my Tesla the phone app is basically 100% reliable, except when the phone itself is dead or with issues. So, I always keep the key card in my wallet anyway.

Do you know if anyone has tried to clone the RFID/NFC keycards? If it's possible, then writing it to another device could be possible, though clearly a security risk.

No. They are encrypted. Very similar to the NFC used in credit cards.

Pretty sure this will happen. Just a matter of priorities and time.

I’d love to be able to use my Apple Watch as a key, as I, more often than not, am not carrying my phone. The watch as a key is THE perfect solution. Forget the bracelet. Forget the key fob. Forget the phone. The watch is all of them in one.

How about for Garmin watches. Rivian is an “Adventure Vehicle” and what would an adventurer wear? A Garmin watch of course.

If it works with the RFID then it would work with Garmin. I believe the Garmin also has NFC because they have Garmin pay.
