face it, the R1S is built for comfort not for speed.

Having owned Suburbans in the past and my wife is driving a BMW X3, I can say that I 100% prefer the R1S look and extra space.

If anything, it should be even bigger, IMO. I wish they had kept the wheelbase of the R1T and made the R1S a proper full-sized SUV, with more 3rd row legroom and more behind 3rd row storage/cargo space. Maybe then we could also have the max-pack in the R1S 7-seater.

I'm 100% feeling this. The pictures make it look big, bulky, and it's making me question it. It probably would be better if, you know, it was possible to see one in person. But as of today, they feel like Unicorns.
I'm fortunate to live where people have the money to be "first" on luxury items like cars. I see Rivians of both types, as well as Lucids, and other rare exotics, on the daily. My son's public elementary school has a mom who drops off in a limestone R1S. I've seen that one 3 times in the past month.

I think the R1S looks great. As I said before, I think it should be even longer, but not sure what that would look/feel like. But I do like the squared off end, both functionally and aesthetically.

what's not to like? Nobody wants a sloped rear that takes away cargo room.

So 4 years into waiting, I keep getting bothered by one thing - the big flat butt on the R1S. It's looks more square (and thus as big or bigger butt) than even a Excursion,Yukon, Escalade, etc. Nearly as bad as the Ford Edge, eg ZERO sloping/aerodynamics appearance.

So the question is - does it bother you, is it easy/hard to see out of all that back end. Does it make it feel bigger than it is (like those other behemoths I mentioned). Would you rather it sloped?

The example I'm coming from is Grand Cherokee.

Nope, need a tall roof so my dogs are comfortable in the back (with third row down). That together with the large frunk make it perfect for me.

The boxy shape is one of the reasons why I like it. I'm coming from a Land Rover LR4 with a similar shape and rather enjoy the boxiness and the extra interior room it provides. I really dislike the modern sloped designs most manufacturers have adopted to help with gas mileage.

What is a "two box SUV"?
imagine a rectangular shoe box. Then think of another rectangular shoe box that's smaller by 30% or so.

Stack the smaller box on the top of the larger box and align one of the ends together. You now have two-box SUV shape w/o wheels.

I came from a 2014 Grand Cherokee. Several times ran into problems because of the sloped liftgate. So far loving the R1S. It's bigger but the overhead camera view makes visibility and navigating in and out of tight spaces even easier than in the JGC.

I have the exact same Jeep GC (2014 Overland). How do the other aspects compare, ride quality, turning radius, road noise? Is there anything you preferred on the Jeep over the R1S?

I sold my Summit in June taking advantage of the high resale value and trusting I was still going to get my R1S in May-June as I was promised right up until it was pushed to Oct-Dec. I did finally take delivery about a month ago but I didn't have a chance to kind of drive one then the other. I'm a few months removed from my JGC. That said, I've described the R1S as the product of my JGC and Tesla having a baby. The interior finish is better than both. A lot of the features - air ride, leveling, etc. - are similar to the JGC. Ride quality I'd say is similar. Turning radius is probably a little wider just because it's bigger but it's similar. Road noise is quieter, I think. It's obviously significantly faster and the interior finish is even nicer than my Summit was.

Now you 2 are speaking my language. 127k miles on '14 JGC. It's been everywhere and done everything, so you're review is telling me that R1S is the right choice in switching. I expect that at some point I'll do a comparison of them.
