The biggest drawback of the R1S versus the other 3-row EVs hitting the market is poor efficiency (requires a large battery to hit the same range) and slow DC charging.

I'm willing to live with the lower efficiency if they can get the 10%-80% charging down to 30 minutes. The current 45 minutes is too long compared to the competition.
Nice thing about our use-case is that we don’t do a lot of traveling. So it’s always charging at home. We don’t need over 300 miles and we don’t need super speed charging.

Rivian has had only trivial issues and service has gone out of their way to come to me with loaners and pick up and drop off my R1T at my convenience.
Can someone tell me about the "pick up and drop off" mentioned by Trandall above 3 replies. With the 'dual motor' I don't think my insurance will be that bad (no tickets, no accidents, and over 65) The Rivian is a fun extra truck for me and my concern is travel to SC for service. This is the only concern I have with buying an R1T.

There is a spectrum of experiences with Rivian service to be fair but the majority are very positive. In 36K miles of ownership I've had two mobile service visits and next week they are picking up my R1T at my home to bring it to the service center and will bring it back when service is complete. They offered a loaner R1T for the two days they need mine but I declined as I have a spare car. Each of these services are for minor-ish items that don't affect drivability or function. Full disclosure I also had a rock crack my front windshield and I had to drive it 280 miles to the service center for repair. I was given an R1T loaner to bomb around town in while they replaced it. I've never had to wait, haggle about warranty coverage, or felt like I was some chore from the Rivian service team. This is all in contrast to what I have found owning plenty new vehicles purchased through a dealer model located within 20 miles. For me the direct sales model even with service located far away has been far superior. Again you can find examples of poor experiences (particularly on forums) but I believe these are the exception and my experiences are closer to the norm.

What "competition"? The R1S is a larger vehicle with 1.5x to 2x horsepower of the "competition". You have to compare Macintosh apples to Gala apples, not apples (R1S) to oranges (Volvo).

The Volvo looks like a great vehicle for most consumers that don't do the crazy things R1's can do.

I would probably thoroughly enjoy owning one. I've always liked the Volvo's I've been in, but never owned one.

I'd still choose an R1 any day of the week if they come in at a comparable price.

I'd personally look into reviews of Volvo's ability to service EV's before making a commitment. Service was a big issue when I looked at Mach-E's a few years back (although I imagine it's improved since). Just because there's a dealer with a service center nearby doesn't mean that dealer has any technicians that know how to work on EV's. The service side of the equation has more to do with people than real estate. I haven't looked into Volvo's local EV service reputation yet.

I'm getting great information today. Thank you. Sometimes in all forums, when you express a concern people take it as a personal insult no matter how gently you express your concern. You provide straightforward information and that helps me, because it is an honest assessment.

See my only concern is travelling with my wife and having something make the Rivian unusable in a remote area at night. I'm a senior and just a bit worried (more than I should be it seems from several 'reliability' responses).

Honestly, I think almost everyone would agree. The R1S is awesome. The Volvo is great.
