I’ve had my 2022 R1T for about 18 months now so pretty familiar with it. Ran into an interesting situation that I’ve not see before.

Just bought a 7000# travel trailer and picked it up from the dealership on Thursday. Towed it to the campground without any issues, about 40 miles. We spent two nights at the campground and on Saturday morning winterized the trailer. This involved using the truck’s onboard air compressor/inflator to blow out the trailer’s water lines. As a note, the inflator worked great to do this. After blowing out the lines, we pumped antifreeze through the trailer’s water lines. This was probably 10-15 minutes. After this we hooked up the trailer and departed.

Immediately upon putting the truck in drive, I had a message of “Speed limited to 6 MPH” which showed up on the steering wheel display. We drove down to the campground’s check in parking lot where I did the following:

1. Disconnected the 7-pin connector and reconnected. Error message remained.
2. Did a soft reboot. Error message remained.
3. Called Rivian and did a hard reboot as instructed by representative. Error message remained.
4. Disconnected the 7-pin connector and reconnected. Error message remained.

At this point the rep was thinking we needed to let the truck go through a sleep cycle. As he was talking, I disconnected the 7-pin connector, changed the ride height in all-purpose mode. Heard the compressor start up and truck changed height. Reconnected the 7-pin connector and all was good.

Any thoughts on what might have happened? The only thing that I can think is the compressor got hot while I was using it blow down the lines and when I hooked up the trailer, the suspension bottomed out (it did seem to be really low) because the compressor wasn’t working to lift the truck. By the time I went through all the above, the compressor had cooled enough and/or manually forcing a change “reset” the software.

We did have to disconnect the trailer twice more during the day and reconnecting everything worked so it appears to have been a one-off. I don’t recall seeing any warning lights/icons other than the message which I find sort of weird. I would have thought the software engineers would show what the cause of the error message is.

That seems strange, pretty sure the suspension air compressor and the compressor for airing up the tires are separate compressors.

That's probably what it was. I recall hearing about that happening to someone else about a year ago after using the onboard compressor.

When you put it in AP mode, did it raise or go down in height? I am guessing it was stuck at a wrong height.

My memory is a touch cloudy as I was majority stressed but I think it raised. I’m really thinking that for some reason it was bottomed out on the suspension and putting it into AP mode and adjusting the height made it reset itself. Just guessing though. Really wish I’d had the presence of mind to take a picture of the screen.

If you have the recording enabled, it may be on video

As mentioned, I don’t think your auxiliary compressor had anything to do with this. Sounds like you were simply stuck in low height mode and manually adjusting the heights got it unstuck.

Are you on 2023.38? Makes me wonder if it's not a new bug in how they refactored towing mode.

Yep, on .38 software when this occurred.

The onboard air compressor is the same as an ARB one and they have a long duty cycle before they overheat even when doing tires so low pressure air shouldn't have been an issue. Not sure what the suspension uses for ride height. Could be a tank on a separate circuit powered from the same compressor or a totally different system. Our GX has a pretty small separate compressor for the air suspension that wouldn't be adequate for tires. It does automatically sense a trailer load or a bunch of passengers added and level itself.
