Certainly, I’m making an assumption just like you are. I guess time will tell what happens. I don’t have a crystal ball, but history is taught me not to underestimate Tesla. They always seem to pull rabbits out of hats.
I'll join you guys and make an assumption that the CT rabbit was pulled out of another place.

You mean the self driving that runs stop signs and trying to run you into parked cars?

And Charging Infrastructure that the R1T will have access to before any real customers get a CT?
And charging without needing sub 10 micro precision parking ;)

(I don't expect the superchargers to open up significantly before December 2024 though)

...battery pack that I may use twice a year, not to mention needing to buy a lift to install/remove the thing. But if I could rent one from Rivian for a reasonable price, I'd be interested. What's a reasonable price though?
I can't really see a rate that makes this easier/preferred vs renting an ICE car depending on trip duration unless it's going onto a specific overlanding build but then installing and removing would be even harder. But if it took 5 min to drive to a service center to load/unload maybe that's a different story.

So, the SC would store your battery?! ?

Zero chance its a 5 min install for the battery. You are likely looking at 3-4 hours minimum. And don't forget .. that labor isn't free. So 6-8 hours each "rent" is probably 600-800 bucks of labor.

I agree, to clarify I'm pro renting an ICE vehicle for nearly any scenario where a rental pack would be helpful.

I do have some questions for the cyberbedfiller though

1. Will it be released before 2033?
2. With the 800v split pack charging, is it charged off of one of those packs, or standalone?
3. What color will the ratchet straps be holding it down?
4. Can they make a round version that can also be a spare tire? (Eff I may have to run and patent that now)

Guessing the R2 will be like the 3/Y are the S/X, cheaper with much better tech. Maybe 48V batteries will be standard by then.

The CT has really cool tech (48v low voltage battery, 800v HV battery, steer by wire, structural skin) but is lacking in useful storage.

Mobile service could deliver it to you and pick it up when you're done? And one use case that it could make sense for is heading into a charging desert. Or towing.
Installing or removing a 600+ lb battery at people’s homes is no small job. It would take at least 2 people 30-60 minutes and specialized equipment (small crane or forklift?) just to put it in the CT bed or remove it without damaging the truck, not to mention the installers would need to be trained to deal with the connection with the HV battery.

Since most people wouldn’t have room for this operation in their garage, it would have to be done outside, which also means it could not be done if it were raining or snowing.

All of this, mind you being for just 1 Tesla model, including the $60k version? It makes no sense.

If that really is the case then just renting an ICE car makes more sense. You have no charging stops ta all then for less rental cost.

The position of the extended battery also means the bed is going to have to be empty. They likely will use an overhead crane to get it into position which means no cargo bars. Renting one just for a trip will be an enormous waste of time. It's not like you can do it at the start of your trip if you have a bunch of stuff with you, which considering the majority of storage space in the CT is the bed, you probably will.
