Inyokern is 223 miles from my house in SD. ABRP wants me to charge first in Hesperia but I think even with the various grades I should make Inyokern if I leave on a 100% charge. Anyone done this? Would be awesome to just stop 2X at Inyokern and Bishop. Probably someone will have to pee before then anyways - if anyone has a great stop along 15 around the Moreno Valley etc for a quick top up to give a little breathing room I would be grateful. TIA.

I’ve done the trip several times. You shouldnt have a problem making it to inyokern In conserve mode. There are several stopping points along 15 if you want to get a little extra juice. You can use Rivian map to ID the best one for you.

inyokern is a nice stop. Clean bathrooms and good food at little hamburger joint that is there

I agree with ADVNOW. The Rivian charging at Inyokern and on the route up is great. I’ve charge at Inyokern at least 10 times now and only once was there a failure on the trailer pull through unit. On holiday weekends it gets crowded on Fridays and Sundays- but good availability the rest of the time. From SD last time I left on about 70% and went out of my way to stop at the Barstow RAN. Not the most efficient but I was on an expedition trip!

Why not stop at the Barstow RAN then skip Inyokern and use the Olanche RAN station then Bishop RAN.

Yeah it’s three stops but definitely wouldn’t have to charge above 70% before Bishop.

I'd do what you can to stay 70-80%
Going above that is a waste of time, especially if you can hit RAN chargers. ( I went from LA to Seattle and To Florida, don't go below 0% it used to give you 10 miles at 0, not any more, turtle mode is not fun on the freeway! )
DO NOT rely on EA, you will regret it.
My 42k R1T has gotten a little less reliable with the mileage available, definitely consider wind and elevation the app isn't great.
PS, I agree with JJ, plan 3 stops, charge to 70, as you get better you can push it but it tends to be nerve racking playing the push game...

Ever since I started taking an EV on road trips (well over 4 yrs now between Tesla and Rivian). I use this website to get an estimate of elevation changes along the route I plan to use.

https://www.flattestroute.com

You can specify start and end points so it's pretty handy. Also, I compare my thinking with Rivian's nav set to arrive at 10% on battery SOC. The thing to keep in mind is actual distance versus elevation changes.

In your particular case, it says 227 miles, so its close your house, but it also shows that it's an up grade for quite a long distance. Even in Conserve mode, starting at 100% SOC, I think it will be close.

What I would do is to see what SOC is in Victorville as you are changing to 395. It's roughly 90 miles between Victorville and Inyokern so if you have at least 150 miles left on the vehicle, you should be fine. OTOH, if it's around 100~120 miles left, I would definitely charge in Victorville (there must be an EA there at a Walmart, but do check. beforehand).

We drove our R1S back from Tahoe on 395 recently to south OC (we went up on 99 to 50 up). We stopped at Bishop and Inyokern RANs. All downgrade on the reverse direction so that was a piece of cake. The last time we drove up 395 was in a Tesla so I cannot comment on if you'll make Inyokern or not...

Thanks for all the replies. Good intel. I am going up Monday and will post back here midweek as to how it went. I like the idea of checking status in Victorville and making the call there.

The second leg of our trip is Mammoth to Tahoe and so I will charge up to at least 80% in Bishop on the way up maybe even 85-90% as I am not anticipating being able to charge in Mammoth. If the condo we’re staying at does have any charging I’ll come back and spill the beans here.

I've done this trip a dozen times. I suggest just stopping anywhere off the 15 or 215 for 10 mins before you hit the pass. Grab a coffee, stretch your legs, whatever. Doesn't matter if you get 10kw or 30kws. That little buffer helps with wind, or cranking the heat or if you have a roof rack on, etc. I drive with a lead foot and the whole drive is a slight incline so not your normal efficiency. I've never had an issue with EA in Hesperia and usually hit it on the way back as I hate afternoon charging on the 15 or 215. My one trip back from Vegas, I took the last spot in Barstow, so no charging spot is immune to a queue and not sure if that detour is worth it as Hesperia is closer.

As for Mammoth, there are new L2 chargers by the ice rink and are conveniently a short walk to Distant Brewery if you need a bite and a beer. Last year my stays didnt have charging so I limited my drives to the mountain and then out to dinner.

Here's my original write-up from my first trip last year. Many software updates ago (pre snow mode).

I'm hoping they open the RANs by Mono Lake soon. It would be better for anyone going to Tahoe and I'd totally grab a quick charge after skiing at June for sanity.

(P.S. - I've made it to Inyokern on a full charge from home. I don't recommend it. Driving slow, conserve mode is harsh ride, keeping heat low or off. Just a bunch of anxiety when you can just stop for 10 mins after an hour or two of driving)
