You're right. Next time I see something new I won't try to learn anything, stay blissfully ignorant, and just wait until something breaks to ask for help.

Give me my crayons so I can go color in the corner.
I agree, 100%! You’re all good.

Honestly, the temps you posted are no biggie. I have seen my go up into the 270’s. Even saw 284 once. On cold days, doing a little preconditioning prior to hitting the road pretty much eliminates the overheating. Since the latest update, 50.01, I have not experienced any unusually high temps.

Rivian made a grave mistake unleashing all this data on the paranoid masses.
In his defense, he doesn't seem paranoid, he's just tryna learn. Most people don't love their cars to the point of hobbyism, so they miss details like this. I didn't know the motors were used this way till now. TIL!

Haha good one.
I had the same revelation a couple weeks ago and it is a bit startling. Knowing these motors (Quad in my case) are very expensive I/you are understandably concerned. I read about EVs daily and all of the Rivian OTA updates and I never read to expect this to occur. Bad job by Rivian in communication.

If the software showed something like:

“*Higher temps due to preconditioning*”

or something similar, there would be a lot fewer questions. At least the color is no longer the universal warning/danger color.

This is a UI problem, not a _user_ problem.

"You can give the man a fish. But if you teach him how to catch fish..." This forum's search tool is far from the worst... and it works.

Searching is part of learning. There are already volumes of searchable posts on the topic. Plus, the GUI is intuitive enough on its own (especially for those familiar with gauges, I would think). Already pointed out, the bars change color as temperature approach and surpass a certain Rivian-defined threshold. That threshold is clearly marked by a red tick mark. A lot like a tachometer in a manual transmission car (or oil temp and coolant temp gauges).

Rivian's GUI design is intuitive [to them] and done with expectation of a certain level of savvy (hence lack of documentation or explanation). It's clear some people require more hand-holding. But I don't think they represent the majority. Perhaps decades of cars with limited instrumentation has conditioned some consumers to be apprehensive? I don't think it's a bad design.

Now if this was the subreddit, I'd agree it's relatively more difficult to search. But even then—fishing tip—the easy solution is to add "r/rivian" to your search string in Google, Bing, etc..

I think there may be a happy medium between posting a new thread and never again asking for help. Maybe a search of the boards first? I don't post often because I usually find posts like this when I search before posting.

But honestly, no big deal either way. I was freaked out the first time my motors hit 250-260 F as well.
