R2 Product Launch at Laguna Beach on March 7th!

Can you have a "worldwide" launch when you only sell to customers in select portions of the USA and Canada?

Perhaps this Worldwide launch is an announcement that R1 will be available to customers in a larger portion of the world.

Since the backlog is almost cleared, it would make sense to start considering a European expansion.

That would involve a lot of work of getting service centers etc in those countries and all we have heard off is Germany.

This would be awesome. I just hope they under promise and over deliver on this.

They did pretty well with the R1T with this all things considered, so hopefully what we see or hear becomes very close to reality.

Technically, it's a worldwide unveiling. Launch, in the business, refers to on-sale date. The GA factory isn't even built yet and no EU expansion date is set. So this is not a launch.

I'd guess the same $1k. Even though it's a lower purchase price, they probably learned from R1 to not open the floodgates wide open—a huge backlog and pent-up frustrations.

u/competerb posted about an article on reddit that says that Rivian is seeking permission to use a public park for a launch event in Laguna Beach on March 7th. This could possibly be related to the R2 because the application references a worldwide product launch event. I guess it's also possible that this will be an event relating to an R1 refresh, but that seems less likely.

My guess is trimotor R1 update with enduro + some efficiency tweaks and possible discontinuation of quad motor Bosch to compete with Tesla trimotor packaging. Would be nice if it’s R2, but have a feeling that will be Q4 or Q1 2025.

It should be R2, they already teased it would be previewed 1st or 2nd qtr 2024.

I started working on a solution for that where it doesn't make the truck think something is plugged in. Wassym making it sound like they were going to fix it made me put it on hold, but that was months ago. Maybe I'll finish it as a proof of concept.

Possible to do tri-motor, but there's no reason to do it when you've planned your packaging around quad. Tesla just plain didn't do that.

I will guess it at $500 as they lean into the "lower price" branding. I'll be reserving two of them either way!

I bet it's simply or primarily the R2 launch. If the primary purpose of the event was to begin selling the R1 in the rest of the world, with a focus on Europe, they would likely have chosen a place other than Laguna Beach.

Maybe it’s their electric bikes? That would be an interesting surprise and easy worldwide launch. Going to be fun to see what comes March 7th, hopefully something good.

I agree they should consider opening up R1 to select OS markets. However…. Rivian have been very clear about R2 being a global product to be sold worldwide. RJ gets asked all the time about when Rivian is coming to this country/that country. He always replies R2 is their global product. The question will be timing. If they get to their initial capacity of 200k pretty quickly I suspect they’ll start shipping OS.

Selfishly as an Aussie I hope they don’t leave RHS vehicles too long down the track!
