It's a fine line between genius and insanity.
They aren’t mutually exclusive in the slightest. Howard Hughes was also a genius and a loon.

Ok. Fair. You don’t like Elon Musk.

Look whether you like him or not or his crazy ideas and tweets … he’s a fricken genius to have pullEd off what he has with Tesla. It’s amazing.

Tesla the company has a lot of faults. But they still are awesome Cars

and yes… Elon and Tesla can teach Rivian a lot about manufacturing. You do realize they haven’t sold anything yet… right? Manufacturing to scale is hard. Very hard. Why do you think we haven’t had any sales yet? Because it’s hard.

As for Musk as an engineer and person… well I think he’s in a class all to himself right now. He’s going to go down as one of thr most brilliant people ever to lI’ve on the planet. That. Being said, I also fee stronobly that he’s losing it. Some of his decisions lately are mind-blogging. He’s headed down the path of another brilliant engineer - Howard Hughes.

Tell me I’m wrong.

Otherwise I hope everybody here is happy and excited about the Rivian future and the love their new trucks. Hopefully soooon.
He actually is not an engineer, he has no engineering degree.

What he did do is take over a company that was making an electric car founded by a couple of other people.

The credit he gets is that he has 1 leg far enough on the other side of the genius/insane line to not understand boundaries and not let people tell him something is not possible. He was able to gather enough engineers to bring his vision to fruition, based on that, not on any engineering ability.

He also gets the credit for SpaceX for the same vision and inability to see boundaries.

He should get the credit for jump starting the EV market and show it as a truly viable possibility. Let’s just make sure he gets credit for what he did and not what others did for him.

Elon and Tesla can teach Rivian what not to do, sure.

Elon musk has done what he’s done by walking on the backs of a lot of very talented people and not listening when people who know what they’re talking about told him things like manufacturing are very difficult at scale, then being surprised when things don’t work.

I do not understand why musk is so lauded for not giving a shit about the realities of making things.

it’s worth noting that Rivian has lots of highly qualified mfg people, some of whom have worked for Tesla. The big difference is the company was founded/is headed by someone who literally has a PhD in “making cars is hard”, and as far as I can tell actually gives a shit about doing it right and treating employees like humans.

Fair point.

Same would be for FL, I mean the blasted state is a peninsula. Pick and choose Rivian got loads of water here! ;)
Especially when tropical storms and hurricanes make landfall. :D

But seriously, Florida being a penninsula at the extreme corner of the country also makes less attractive. The geography reduces the amount of people potentially availalble for the workforce (unless they hire manatees and dolphins), and increases travel distance from a logistics viewpoint. One benefit would be import/export harbors.

Manatee labour pool is, unfortunately, shrinking rapidly ?

So, I didn't say anything about his intelligence or his success. He very obviously has both. I said I didn't like him (and didn't elaborate further, so anything you think I mean is an assumption) and then I criticized a specific action he took in detail. In fact, I even purposefully glossed over my broader opinions about the dude so we didn't have to get into that, but did want to confirm my bias so you could read my comments with fuller context.

Musk isn't an engineer, as others have confirmed.

Rivian has sold 100,000k vehicles by contract with Amazon. So, yes, you're wrong. Just because consumers don't have the truck yet it doesn't mean they aren't fulfilling or being paid for orders. Besides, the next sale is presumably next month, so meh on that argument.

Also, like... smart, successful people aren't exempt from criticism about their actions. No need to get spun up. Sounds like I got under your skin. ?

I think it would be more correct to say the Musk does not have a degree in engineering. One doesn't have to have a degree in order to be an engineer.

The word "engineer" is highly abused. In some states or countries, public use of the word as a title requires holding professional certification, and a degree is not sufficient. It's barely enforced in general.

May I suggest you go to SpaceX and take a tour. It might open your eyes.
