I have a community inquiry regarding I-80 through Wyoming. We are driving our R1S (quad w/ 20”AT) from Boise to DFW for the eclipse (stopping in Milliken, CO for an overnight stay with a relative) and both Rivian’s nav and ABRP won’t take us on I-80 through Wyoming. Rivian and ABRP’s route add 1 hour of drive time plus way too much time at 50kW chargers.

I-80 through Wyoming has EA stations in Evanston and Rawlins WY that are 212 miles apart. I checked PlugShare, and both EA stations should be good to go. I also have the Lectron NACS-to-CCS adapter, but the Tesla Superchargers in Rock Springs, WY seem to be V2, so no good for Rivians.

What am I missing? Has anyone else driven their R1 through Wyoming on I-80?

I did that drive last year.
  • I charged in Evanston at EA 350kW (cheap! charge was per minute, not per kWh).
  • I charged overnight at the Tesla destination charger at Rock Springs at 11.5kW (free, with a Tesla->J1772 adapter). I planned the trip so I could stop there overnight, because without this it would have been painful.
  • I charged in Rawlings at EA 350 kW. (also cheap).
  • The Rivian RAN charger in Cheyenne is now open. That's a big help! From Cheyenne I went down to Fort Collins (Wellington) and charged at an EA there.
I made note of the other available chargers along the way, in case I needed them. There are additional CCS options opening along I-80 this summer, but they won't be available when you go.

None of the Tesla Supercharger along that route are open to CCS vehicles.

Why do you think the 212 miles from Evanston to Rawlins would be painful without stopping in Rock Springs? I realize I'll have to charge well past 80% in Evanston (planned on going to 95%+), but this still seems doable. The elevation change doesn't seem to be too extreme. And I was planning on setting driver+ and drafting behind a semi. Am I going to be crying on the side of the road just short of Rawlins?? LOL!

Honestly it wasn't that leg I was worried about. I could have made it from Evanston to Rawlins of course, but then I would have to spend quite a lot of time at Rawlins fast charging to make it to Fort Collins via Cheyenne at >200 miles (and allowing for extra miles because I like to take detours along the way to see things). And the Rawlins charger had been off-line for a month prior to my trip, so even though I had called EA ahead of time to verify the Rawlins charger was working I wanted to hedge my bets. By charging to 100% in Rock Springs I could be sure that I would be able to get to my next destination even if the Rawlins chargers were down.

Oh and I should also mention. My style of traveling doesn't involve 16 hours of driving - I am so over that. I like to see things along the way. So on that trip I was going from Provo to Jackson Lake, CO, which is about 9 hours if you do nothing else along the way. But I wanted to do things along the way, so I split it into two days, driving ~5 hours each day.

I'm really looking forward to retirement to be able to take more leisurely travel plans. I might do closer to 8 hours of travel in a day, but definitely not the endurance run I just did for travel to/from the total eclipse!

I haven’t done that whole drive but I’m working up in Cheyenne this month and have used the RAN there multiple times now. It’s not necessarily near I-80 or I-25 but it is near plenty of restaurants and a throwback 90s Shopping mall!

I've spent many an afternoon strolling through the aforementioned (Frontier) mall. Not much else for a kid in Wyoming to do...
