ICE only :(
think it’s interesting that the top comment on this article is about how auto companies are going to dispose of the EV batteries. Rivian is ahead of the curve on this one too
yeah, and also about fires. EVs catch fire less frequently than ICE vehicles (I believe both in real terms and as a % of them on the road), but headlines make it seem like the opposite. The fires do behave very differently, but that is mostly something that just has to be dealt with through more experience and training for fire crews.

Ocean Beach SF is some of the best surfing on the west coast (swell permitting) and it’s 15 mins from my house. Closest spots to surf in Seattle are over 2 hours away.

Skiing is closer in Seattle, but 1.5-2.5 hours in the car isn’t that far off from 3.5 to Squaw Valley with arguably the best lift in America (KT-22 ⛷)
If y'all just want to surf and ski get a Subaru! ha ha

I had a Crosstrek and it had no room for my shit. Now I have a Tacoma and I love all the extra space, but hate that I spend about $100 every time I need to fill up the tank. Looking forward to the R1S for bikes, boards, skis, passengers, and less of an impact on the environment than my gas guzzling truck.

As someone who splits his time between the bay area and Seattle, I call bullshit on Squaw being only 3.5 from SF. Maybe 4.5-5 hours. You're sitting 30-60 minutes alone on the MacArthur maze/bay bridge segment alone. Seattle, is sub 1 hour from the nearest resort and quite a few sub 2 hours.

At that rate, we have Whistler Blackcomb at 4 hours away with traffic

That said, I still have my bay area homes, because I visit it once in a while. But don't knock on Seattle. it's a great place to be.

There was more talk then there should have been about the 2wd and weather it was FWD or not but the intro to the MT vid shows RWD only to me.

It was 3.5-4 when I was growing up and traffic wasn't that bad. Now it's horrible traffic on the weekend. we used to drive up in the morning, and come back in the evening, and hitting that 3.5-4 hour timing involved stretches of doing 95-100mph. You're sitting 30-60 minutes alone on the MacArthur maze/bay bridge segment alone.

Seattle, I'm 55 minutes from the nearest resort and quite a few sub 2 hours. Squaw's tickets are ridiculous now these days, and the crowds are insane (even with an Ikon pass).

That said, I still have my bay area homes, because I visit it once in a while. But don't knock on Seattle. it's a great place to be.
Time it right and you're there faster than that. If you can leave early, leave before 2pm on a Friday. If not, don't leave until 8pm at least. If that's not your style, drive up at 5am Saturday and you're in the parking lot before KT spins.

On the way back, I'll admit it can be trickier timing, because big trucks passing other big trucks on the 2 lane stretch of I-80 before Auburn can back the highway up until Emigrant Gap and beyond.

With any kind of weather you're obviously going to see delays, but that's the case for every ski mountain. The reward is fresh powder though... :)

No need to argue over what area is more awesome (though it's Seattle ;)). Definitely not suggesting not to have the event in SF.

And that's always been the personal drawback. Either have a place to stay up there (used to have a place in Truckee), or get up at 5 AM. That's when I'm doing the 3.5 hour runs. The run back used to be clearer though.

Maybe I'm getting too old to deal with traffic and driving that long far. It's also going to be an interesting question of doing the 196 miles fast enough and having enough charge on a Rivian.

BTW, not knocking the bay as a nice place to live (esp if you have money). As i said, I have homes there, and I love the Santa Cruz mountains for road biking. Weather is always warmer, and sunnier.

According to A Better Route Planner, if you are pretty conservative with the efficiency and driving in harsh weather, you will still only have to stop once on your way up. If you have charging while you're up there, or stop at the Electrify America station in Truckee on your way out, you can make the trip back with no stops. Looking forward to charging from 80-100% in regenerative braking down Donner Pass :)

Last time I took my old subaru up to ski, I got stuck in the damn parking lot because Steven's pass didn't plow it during the day and didn't have enough clearance. :CWL:

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing too. It's still 2 charging sessions. Once probably in Auburn on the way up.

This is interesting as we were just commenting similarly:

Barron's: “The target market for Rivian will be the Connecticut Cowboys or those that don’t really need a pickup for its intended use,”
"said Benchmark analyst Mike Ward."

I take exception to this anal-yst's statement about "need a pickup for it's intended use". Presumably he is implying the out of date stereotype that pickup trucks are intended for "work use". Wake up, Mike Ward - for at least the past 20 plus years, a pickup truck has been a mainstream vehicle with diverse intended uses by a diverse group of people.
