Again disagree the economics are there to offer updated cameras and compute in gen 1. it doesn’t require the new architecture. I don’t even understand your dead end argument. it’s no more a dead end than any product, they don’t need to sell it at a loss and it keeps the early adopter good will at an acceptable level, theres a lot of people who are pissed they’ve abandoned long standing features that were promised in writing on the gen 1 platform that’s not good for the brand period

the entire industry is not moving to zonal many are adopting central instead

and I’m fine with the expanded explanation of your analogy my gripe was the connotation of a wired to wireless architecture. it’s not quite that far of a jump
From a sales and marketing viewpoint, it is dead end because Rivian is not producing any new vehicles that would use it. It's not going to happen.

Ya that’s kind of the point not a good look for Rivian to leave people who spent over $100k a month ago with a dead end product

Will someone please just rip a camera off a new Gen 2 and see if the plug matches the Gen 1?! It really can't be that hard. Plugs fit or they don't!

Preferably the rear bumper camera.

My son’s Acura has less hardware and computing power than my R1S and it does a better job than Driver+. You can’t tell me there isn’t room for Driver+ improvement via software upgrades without changing any hardware. I can’t recall the exact verbiage, but Rivian promoted the trucks as hands free when I put the deposit down in 2019. It was one of the main reasons I bought it. So, obviously, they had plans for improvements. Completely bailing on that is bait and switch. As first generation owners, we deserve better.

Will have been a real miss to release the Gen 1 and not have the ability to do at least really good highway assist on par with Tesla. Our Gen1 stuff knows exactly which lane we're in. It's mapped that well. It slows down for corners and whatnot. It's all there except lane change and interchange management (which was teased in a previous release and pulled for some reason).

I've driven every vehicle I've ever owned until it died of old age. Not a one unmodified. Is that supposed to be some sort of dig?
Sounds like you'll be the one to figure it out. Dunno how you're gonna trick the software into liking any of it.

If part of the mission is sustainability it's counter mission to not let existing owners retrofit as much as possible for a fee obviously. Sad Rivian doesn't see this.
I agree but there are so many issues with doing this on such a complex piece of machinery.
(1) Would be ungodly expensive to retrofit everything. You would not like the quote if it was made available.
(2) Way too many safety concerns - ripe for issues and lawsuits.
(3) Impossible to keep up with the software changes required to accommodate so many different versions of vehicles.

Rivian cheaped out on the hardware and cameras for gen 1. Really glad I traded in my R1T a few months ago. The new hardware and cameras look a lot better.
Cameras are one of the things I'd really like to update on my R1S. Doubt it's even the slightest bit feasible based on drivers, hardware mounts, etc.

At least Gen1 has enjoyed free lte service. My steering wheel sensors have been out since day 1 so I cannot enjoy lane stay.
That's coming to an end soon.. probably by the end of summer unfortunately.

1) Disagree we’re not talking about going to the new architecture we’re talking about replacing the cameras they would still connect over their existing coax to retrofitted ADAS computer with similar spec to the new ADAS computer the software branches to do that would not be unmanageably divergent.

Cameras are around $97 retail and the R1T has 11 so
- $1067
the new ADAS computer based on comparables would be about
- $1500
Lets just say a full week of labour to be totally safe so at their shop rate of $170 an hour thats
-$6800 in labour ( but that’s likely a gross over estimate)

$9367 I’d be totally fine with that and these are retail costs they pay closer to $10 for cameras but likely a slimmer margin for the ADAS computer

2) how so comparative with the current two systems?

3) completely disagree as someone who works in software engineering this is completely managable

Maybe as a thank you for unkept promises and dead ending our updates so quickly G1 owners should get Connect+ for free in perpetuity

I’ve got a folder with a handful of screenshots from the website and official communications and notes of what I think can generously be called overcommitments and what a hungry lawyer would call fraud in the inducement. I can’t be the only person thinking that Rivian is risking a class-action, costly settlement, and some follow-up shareholder litigation for good measure. Love my R1T and have had a great experience with Rivian, but this pattern would currently prevent me from buying another. Very sad.
You should probably re-read your reservation and purchase agreements.

I don't disagree. But given the current financial situation, they have to make tough decisions that people may not like.
