I love my glass roof, wouldn’t want any Rivian without one. So with this new dynamic glass roof:

1. Would it really cut the heat and make the interior less hot? If yes, how much? I am not worried about the privacy from those sneaky aliens and Musk are looking at what we are doing?
2. It may never come to Gen 1; but I can still ask, is there any indication that it would come. I do think wiring is already there.
3. I was sincerely hoping for Rivian to develop the roof shade. Should I be still be hoping or get something 3rd party. If yes, can one you recommend one of good quality.

I am looking at gear shop for anything new. But nada so far. I do see prices have come down on recovery board; but I just dont like the concept of black recovery board. The last thing I need to search for is this black recovery board under my vehicle in the beach or the woods. I dont like orange either. Something neutral; maybe white/gray, as I have GW R1S.

I’ve been using a foldout shade with a reflective top. I forget the manufacturer, but it was around $30 and I put it in seasonally. It makes a big difference.

The new roof option looks really cool, but I don’t know I’d pay $1,500 for it when my $30 option seems pretty functional. I honestly rarely notice the roof of my car whether it’s in or out.

To you first question it will absolutely reduce heat in the cabin if it diffuses the sun light. In the same way a tinted window does. Light absorbed on the roof radiates less heat in the cabin then heat absorbed by materials inside the cabin.

1. I'm sure we'll get answers soon enough. I don't think the early reviewers had enough time in sunny weather to review it.
2. Honestly, why would Rivian do that? If you want it buy a gen 2, that's what Rivian would say, it's a stupid waste of money for them to port HW back to gen 1, especially if porting that back takes away a potential gen 2 sale.
3. I think there are already third party shades, they may still come out with one, but I'm sure it's going to cost more than the equivalent third party one.

I bought this shade over a year ago. It's held up great, we love it. They probably have an equivalent option for the S: https://a.co/d/jdXULqx

Also got 2 sets of these back in Feb '23. I've used them multiple times for snow recovery, they've worked GREAT. Offered in a few different colors (I bought black): https://a.co/d/fawY5LP

Diffusing sunlight would NOT reduce heat in the cabin, it needs to hopefully reflect IR, and to a lesser extend, absorb IR. I don't think we really know how well it does any of that, you can't tell via a normal picture, though I would say it seems to do more than just diffuse the light.

I suspect the electronic does nothing for IR, and they may had added a separate IR tint on top of it.

IR is just a non-visible band of light, so while what you saying is true to some degree if it only diffuses visible light I don't see that as likely.

we also have a BMW iX which has a monochromatic panoramic roof like the one on the Gen2s. I can confirm in an opinionated fashion that this is at best a gimmicky addition for the tech appeal. Subjectively, these monochromatic roofs have only limited effect on a) heat reduction b) light reduction and c) visibility reduction (even when on, there is still like a ~3-5% transparency to it)…

On a sunny day I can easily identify the sun in the sky, even if I can’t see the tree tops anymore.

This is also the experience I’ve made in various Tokyo luxury hotels who have been deploying these monochromatic windows on their skyscrapers for years.

Awesome thank you. This is what we needed to know!

I really like Rivian attention to details. So they may release one , as they did for windshield reflector; if these dynamic roof glass does not cut the in-cabin temp for afternoon nap in the wilderness.

I honestly wish they just released an automatic shade like F150 Lightning has instead. Would have been a lot cheaper and wouldn't increase the cost of repairs if the roof glass cracks.

The problem is this would cost money. I just wished they offered a solid metal panel roof instead of the glass roof that cooks you like a turkey. This would not only save money it would reduce weight (increase kWh/mile efficiency), reduce strain on a/c (further increasing efficiency), increase driver comfort, lower center of gravity, make the cabin quieter and reduce ongoing liability for Rivian since those glass roofs are very expensive to repair and can crack unlike a metal roof.

Agree with other posters that the electrochromic glass is a gimmick. It will do nothing do virtually nothing to reduce heat in the cabin. The product is more of a window froster that obscures your view. I guess it's a cool party trick if you want to show the kids the trees and then instantly make them disappear. Otherwise for adults it's just another gimmick, which adds to the gimmicky allure of the glass roof itself.

What is this automatic shade for F150? Is there a link; at least my quick search did not pull anything. I know it will never come to Rivian; but will be good to have an idea of what is out there.
