Given what @RWerksman shared, this AMA appears to be focused on the new hardware. Maybe our Gen1 questions fall under the “and more” category.https://riviantrackr.com/news/rivia...m-bensaid-to-host-rivian-ama-ask-me-anything/
Time to get ready with all the questions about the Gen1 software features .....![]()

Edit: changed link to graphic to show the relevant part.
I get that, but it was posted with specific topics listed: “Gen 2 platform,” and, “Rivian Autonomy Platform.” To me, it reads like it is an AMA about Gen 2 specific improvements first and foremost.Well, it is an Ask Me Anything so it shouldn't be focused on any specific topic.
Yes, you can upgrade all components to the new Gen 2!Question about the Gen2 platform… can it be retrofitted on our Gen1 vehicles for a price?![]()

I both laugh and cry at this, but I think some acknowledgment from RIvian that what they said in 2022 didn't pan out would go a long way:Yes, you can upgrade all components to the new Gen 2!
However, the upgrades are only offered as a package (all or nothing) and the cost is equal to a new Gen 2 vehicle. A major caveat is that your existing configuration of colors, wheels, tow hooks, and reinforced underbody shield may have to be adjusted to match Gen 2 configurations. If your vehicle is leased or has an outstanding loan the upgrade will require changes. A new VIN will be issued to reflect the upgrades.
The good news is that the process is VERY fast and should take no more time than trading in an old vehicle and taking delivery of a new one.

- TECHNOLOGY WITH HEADROOM“Creating new technology with this tight integration, from start to finish, means we get unprecedented control over the quality, performance and features of our vehicles,” Vidya says. “We build what our customers want. We build what inspires us. We’re not putting out static software designed around off-the-shelf hardware – because we build our hardware with plenty of headroom, we’re able to add all kinds of capabilities and features over time through software.”
The hardware in Rivian vehicles – everything from interior displays to the interconnected electronic control units that power everything from vehicle dynamics to battery management – were designed and built to deliver amazing experiences both today and in the future – to be ready for the innovation coming three, five, even 10 years down the road.
I would bet on before the article was posted, someone knew it was wrong, obsolete.Based on the timelines of automotive development, within a month or two of writing this article (if not even before) they must have scrapped the whole gen1 architecture and moved onto gen2. We didn't even make it three years before gen1 was deprecated, let alone 10. What really hurts here is that in the above quote they *specifically* call out the ECU's that are now consigned to history.
The good news is that they HAVE to keep updating Gen 1 for years to come: just maybe not what was promised. Why do I say that? Because if they promised a long life for Gen 1 and cut that short who will believe the promises of a long life for Gen 2? I think they made a mistake in committing to a lifespan at all and they’re better off not making commitments they can’t keep. They could always admit that tech changes VERY quickly and Rivian is committed to keeping vehicles on the road for sustainability, so they are supporting platforms for at least x years after a new version comes out or provide an upgrade path.I both laugh and cry at this, but I think some acknowledgment from RIvian that what they said in 2022 didn't pan out would go a long way:
