HOLD at stoplight, is it same as having foot on brake?

Saw a thread today about HOLD and fine movement and reminded me of a question I had.

I have gotten used to 1 pedal driving, I don't even know the last time I touched the brake. Sitting at a stoplight the other day I was thinking; With an ICE vehicle, I would sit with my foot on the brake through the entire red light and then transition to gas... with the Rivian I probably should at least take my foot away from the gas pedal in case someone rear ends me, I don't want to launch forward.

So question was if it's sitting at a light in HOLD and foot away from gas and someone rear ends you, does HOLD act like brakes are applied? Or is it better to get in the habit of applying brakes at lights?

I love 1 pedal driving, but just wondering the minute details I may be missing because of it.

My understanding of Hold, in the Rivian, is that it applies the electronic brake. At least that is my experience when trying to get into neutral in a carwash. I have ended up in neutral, but hold on, and it will not roll in the carwash in that situation, rear wheels are locked.

My Ford has hold turned off, but in that case it just uses the motor to hold the vehicle. My GM does not have the hold feature and it also holds with just the motors. With both those, you only need to push the brake pedal if you are on a very steep incline.

This is correct. It doesn't apply the electronic brake as mentioned in another post. The electronic brake operates way too slow for brake hold at a stop light. It applies the regular brakes electronically.

As others stated, hold uses the normal brakes just as if you were stepping on the brake pedal. If you were rear ended it should continue to hold the brakes until you hit the accelerator.

If it is a significant collision with airbag deployment I believe the the rivian (as with most other abs systems) locks up the brakes prevent the vehicle rolling away incase the driver is non-responsive.

That being the case, then safety wise, it's like sitting with your foot on the brake? I'm old, but still learned that from my father, always sit with foot on brake in case you are rear ended (seemed logical and simple enough).

I always thought he didn't want me hurt, but since I inherited his cheap genes and have grown older, I realize he probably didn't want to pay to repair rear AND front damage if it ever happened

If you read the Motortrend article on tow charging their Rivian, they had issues with auto hold just absolutely slamming on the brakes.

So yes it’ll keep trying to stop the vehicle, even with external forces applied. The system does not want you to roll away.

If you get rear-ended, physics determines your foot will move AWAY from the pedals…not toward. If you get hit hard enough, all bets are off.

Yes. I can go days without touching the brake pedal. Its only use for me is the initial application to go into D or R, then to discontinue the adaptive cruise control. I otherwise stay in high regen and never use brakes.
