The new improvements to the software were superficial. There is a huge list of desired software improvements on RivianTrackr that Rivian should focus resources on. These would make the user experience much better.

YouTube Music. The best service there really is and it's not close. Next, a weather radar app.

For what it's worth, the Rivian in-vehicle UI has ALWAYS been powered by the Unreal engine, it's not a new feature. The previous "photo-realistic" UI was also rendered by Unreal.

We all have our own personal preferences. I don’t really care for the new look, from fonts to cartoonish graphics. But maybe more Rivian owners like it. So I will learn to live with it, have no choice. However, Rivian should spend more time with actual improvements rather than frivolous graphics. My advice to Rivian is to give us some options for our displays. Give us a choice from a menu. When I am in my personal driving position I cannot see the turn signal indicators. There was an older thread on this and it seems to affect taller people. I have to turn my head to the side to see them. But give us an option for their location. High or low. Also, clock, and odometer choice on drivers display. Looking to the far right of the center display to see the time, seems like a safety issue, distracted driving. Time should be on drivers display. Rivian should have plans for a heads up display like BMW, with options on what is displayed. Just my thoughts.

The new Rivian look sucks, but my 4yr old loves it.

Some Unreal engine will go full scale and the simulator will be more powerful and interactive. This is just in rudimentary stage. FYI

True. However, you love them even more when they have good substance. Kind, considerate, good morals, good work ethic etc… Just saying.

I think you're conflating an unrelated set of features. That demo was talking about how Unreal can render foliage, multi-layered surfaces, and generate automatic scenery. I doubt any of those features have a real use in the Rivian UI. Again, Unreal is not new when it comes to the Rivian UI.

Internally, the Rivian software has a 3D model of the vehicle it uses for displaying things like the traffic awareness display in the driver display and the drive mode illustrations in the center display. It uses Unreal to animate that model and the draw the "skin" on it. To oversimplify a bit, all this new UI really does is change the skin drawn on the model from a more photo-realistic one to the cell-shaded one. That's it. The underlying technology stack has not changed and there is no new meaningful UI capability introduced in this update.

The UI for me is a huge improvement in these specific areas.

The bolder font for the speedometer is awesome. The goal is to get your speed without having to spend time looking at a wispy font to figure out what it is. But that compass yellow is so attractive I spend more time looking at it than I should. ?

The drive mode selection screen is superior now that it has defined hit areas for each drive mode. The older icons on the plain background made one need to watch their finger press the icon. Now, less concentration is needed to get to the right mode the first time.

Also, I’m happy with the cel shaded image of the truck. I’m driving the ubiquitous silver and don’t see a need to stare at an image of the truck. I would prefer my truck to think of itself as compass yellow or El Cap and display those colors. I would be more interested in my display showing an R1S in the pikes peak hill climb livery (our personal Go-Faster Stripes). Why? It’s in your truck’s blood.

I'm intrigued that unreal engine spends all their time trying to make their imagery look as realistic as possible and the Rivian's ui went the other way.

Unfortunately, this is likely not possible with the Gen 1 vehicles. Apparently the truck is only using the single windshield camera for driver assistance, which is why vehicles disappear as soon as they are out of the view of that camera. It’s also why the Gen 1 vehicles will never get lane change assist.

Since the Gen 1 system is unlikely to get any further substantive development/feature additions, I wouldn’t expect to see any big improvements going forward.
I believe it can be programed into the software as the vehicle has sonar in the back and proximity sensors for the mirror. Yet, probably not a priority for management as they working on looks instead of function.

It might be unreliable without camera confirmation because the proximity sensors can also pick up walls, plants, high curbs, etc. it’s very similar to the old Autopilot version that was based on MobileEye.

The original Model X had the same issue where cars only displayed on the drivers screen when they were in front of the vehicle and they disappeared once they got to the side, despite all of the proximity sensors. The original Model X with AP1 used MobileEye, didn’t have side cameras, and only relied on the windshield camera, like the Gen 1 R1 vehicles (except we have side cameras but they aren’t used). Since the screen behavior is the same I figure it must be an actual limitation of the system and not just an unwillingness to handle the programming.

UI is fundamental on how you engage with the machine. They should be spending more time on it - not less. Most of your asks are actually improvements in the thing you are bashing.

You should just get rid of your driver's screen then.
No I think you’re missing the point, there are more important things to show there than the angle of the truck. At least that’s how I see it. Again, nobody is going to agree on how this looks. It won’t please everyone and I guess that’s the point of this thread

Just give me a short cut to turn off the screen entirely. Like in camp mode. All my other vehicles with touch screen had a “Calm Screen” or simply Display Off. It’s a massive distraction while driving.
