I just put in a custom order for a 2025 (gen 2) R1S. A lot of people are posting about switching to shop orders. For now, I plan on sticking with my custom order so I’m posting to say hi, create a post for others about custom delivery timing in the current environment, and hopefully get some tips and insights from fellow Rivian drivers (I currently drive a Model Y and my wife drives an i4 - so first Rivian but not first EV). I ordered on 8/25/24 and will post back when it delivers with a breakdown of events. My build is a R1S Dual Max, Rivian Blue, Ocean Coast interior, 22” Sport Bright wheels, darkout, premium audio, chilewich mats, air compressor.

So far, the order had delivery as August-September when I placed it on 8/25. That seems very unlikely so I asked the service advisor. He said end of Septemner, beginning of October was likely for my build with only the darkout causing a small delay. So, we’ll see. He offered up that I can monitor the shop if I wanted to go faster, but if the timing is real it’s fast enough for me.

I’ll post back with results. In the meantime, if anybody has new owner tips, I’m happy to hear them.

Welcome (almost) to the RIVIAN family. I, too, moved over from a Model Y and truly couldn’t be happier. Looking forward to pics, when available. Happy days ahead….

First off, congrats! Now the wait begins. :)

You're already starting to have the right frame of mind—start thinking about what specs are must-have vs nice-to-have. In that spirit, I have heard (from Forum and folks at Rivian) that Darkout, Dynamic Roof, and Air Compressor are the specs that could be/are delaying orders.

I was personally affected by all three of these specs. I ordered a custom build on June 6, the day Gen 2 was announced, with all three of those options, and I could tell my order was going to get delayed beyond the 'Aug-Sep' estimated delivery. I wasn't okay with that, so I ended up finding a shop order that had everything I wanted except for those three specs. I figure I can do the darkout myself; I already have mobile air compressors that can do most (if not all) everything I would need; and the dynamic roof isn't a must-have for me (I hope I don't regret it).

My suggestion is to think about what's important to you. If you want a car in a timely manner, you may need to go without some options; if you're willing to wait, you can likely get exactly what you want. Good luck!

I ordered a Tri motor on June 6, 2024 within hours of the site going live. I have been checking daily and my projected delivery date of September – October has not changed. With that said, I am concerned about the actual delivery occurring during the projected window period. There was a post by RJ a few weeks ago that indicated they were still testing the tri motor in sand to optimize its performance. I don’t know if that will delay the projected delivery time. Your dual motor is more likely to be delivered in a timely fashion because they are already producing them , please keep us posted on any developments regarding your delivery date.

Good thoughts. Thanks for the advice. Hours after I placed my order, I saw one in the shop that was exactly my config except the compressor. I clicked the compressor as kind of “sure, why not” so it’s definitely not a must have. But I hadn’t been contacted by an advisor yet so had no contact. Now I do so I’ll keep looking. I’m fine being patient but am also aware of rivianroamer.com.

Posting back the first update. Soon after placing my order I received an email from the service center just making contact. I asked if the Aug-Sept range on the order was realistic or would it be closer to January. They said that late Sept to early October was realistic for my build. After that, there was no news during Sept.

Then today I received a text out of the blue referring to “once your vehicle has finished production” so I texted back and asked if I can infer it has entered production. They replied that yes, the vehicle is in production.

Nothing changed yet on the web site. So I’ll post back when that happens so others reading this will have a sense of the timeline.

Here’s the full text I received:

Hi, this is the delivery team from Rivian Phoenix. Congratulations on placing your Rivian order! Once your vehicle has finished production you will receive an email invite to start the purchasing process and we will facilitate an intro call. For your convenience, feel free to contact us via text directly on this number if you have any questions in the interim. We are super excited to get you behind the wheel!

Good luck! What will an order like that run these days?

It is a while ago but I think I got directed to shop when I had a LE because I wanted the white interior but there was a delay. I ended up getting black and throwing in under body shield. I've hit a rock (with no issues) off road so I am glad I got underbody. Haha.

I suspect the times will be getting shorter for custom orders since they had to catch up the original run and then had other issues and then introduced revamped product. But we’ll see.

Moving quick from here. One day later and I received a text from the local services enter that the vehicle is on route. I now have the process steps open in the app and a delivery appointment on October 24th.

So, all good so far. Two months from order to delivery on a custom order is very reasonable.

Another update ….. with a surprise.

So, generally nothing unexpected. I went through the purchase steps and uploaded documents. I just held back at signing the purchase agreement, which I’ll do before delivery.

The surprise is that today I received an email with a shipping number for the NACS adapter that will arrive tomorrow. So, apparently they’re all caught up.

Huh, I took delivery last week and haven't gotten anything.

Unless it was delivered with the vehicle and is hidden in a cubby somewhere? I've looked a lot of places, but might have missed something.

I’m just about in the same boat @AZMurph
Ordered 9/13 glacier white, oceans coast interior, premium audio, air compressor, AT tires. No word yet beyond my Sept-Oct delivery estimate here in CT, but I’m ok to wait. I’d be thrilled if it’s only 2 months from order to delivery.
