Any one else totally dissatisfied with the locking / unlocking experience?

Thanks. Whatever the updates have been, my (anecdotal) experience has been it is still an issue that needs to be remedied as recent as 2 hours ago. All the issues listed above are still affecting my R1S so I’m not sure of all the fixes that were put in place, but whatever they were, it’s still an issue on my vehicle built in November 2023. So hopefully many more updates are coming. but I standby my statement …..if the Rivian team wasn’t smarter than Henry Ford they could’ve just gone with pre-existing key/fob/PAAK technology and saved many of us the frustration. Luckily, somehow it didn’t affect your vehicle.
It should be working properly for you. I had some issues with responsiveness when we first bought ours a little over a year ago. Subsequent updates have made it so good the only times it doesn’t work exactly as I’d expect is when it turns out I don’t have my phone with me (Doh!) or, on one occasion when I had something metallic in my pocket which seemed to interfere with the signal.

While still anecdotal, I have 4 friends who own Rivians and I haven’t heard about PAAK issues from any of them. If you were closer I’d offer to help troubleshoot but I think you’re on the other side of the country. I think it would be helpful to try pairing my phone with your truck since using a phone known to work with a Rivian would really help narrow down where the problem lies.

But demanding to see the management is so satisfying! /s
To be fair, I can see how a failure every single time you go to drive your truck would get really annoying. Hopefully @JayGee has had a Service Center look at it.

Thanks, it’s not a failure every single time not even every day, but enough to be annoying. Compounded by sharing 2 homes so proximity setting only works at one.….. as far as I’ve been able to figure out . as many have mentioned, I too cannot just shut off Bluetooth. I do close the app, but that doesn’t stop the car from opening and closing handles and chirping in the woods.
i’ll troubleshoot more, which is what I was trying to do in the forum Between 11 PM and 2 AM. I’ll include it when it’s being serviced for something else, good suggestion.

Okay, I was picturing a different problem.

I think Rivian needs a more robust favorites list in navigation where each destination can be named, assigned an icon, sorted, and assigned settings like proximity lock on/off, proximity unlock on/off, charge schedule/amperage, etc. Then we’d be able to set preferences for home(s), office(s), friend(s), relative(s), and other frequent destinations which need specific settings.

We have land where we keep a camper and I have to make a point of either parking further away or putting the Rivian in shipping mode overnight to both keep it from locking/unlocking and to minimize drain.

2025 R1S Gen2, I have to wait up to 30 seconds in the worst case to unlock the car by touching the door handle sensor (while the phone is in a pocket). it's super rare when it unlocks within a second- two.
And I don't have such shenanigans with my Tesla (half of the price) - always responsive.
Very frustrating.

Use camp mode for that. It completely disables proximity lock/unlock, sounds and lights.

That’s why I also wrote that I was trying to minimize drain. My understanding is that shipping mode does all that you mentioned while conserving more power than camping mode by shutting down more systems.

We’re at a camper, but we aren’t really camping; we use it more like a tiny off-grid home and we aren’t relying on the vehicle for anything while we’re there. There is no cell service there. I don’t need the vehicle trying to connect to cell service, a Wi-Fi hotspot, HVAC, or anything else. I think shipping mode is better for what we’re trying to do: keep the vehicle powered down while we’re at a remote location. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the difference between camp mode and shipping mode?

Having my cell phone as a car key is a stroke of genius, one of the greatest things about having an EV. LIke my Teslas, and my R1S, there is nothing better than walking up to it, grabbing door latch, opening door, getting in, and starting to drive. No card key, no fob (never have used it, do not even know where it is.) Then get out of the car and walk away. Vehicles lock and arm themselves up. Nothing beats that.
In my view, keyfobs are so ICE, so passe, so no, thank you.
Have you tried reprogramming your spouse's phone?
Have seen complaints about vehicle unlocking and locking as you walk by it. Unfortunate, perhaps that is the way the system is supposed to work. Have not a care in the world about that.
I do hope that you find a way to fix this that works for you?

Where do you park your car at home? Presumably in a secure location or you surely would have a care in the world that it's constantly unlocking itself as your walk around your house. Alternatively you set it to lock only at home, which means you're right back to fumbling around with a device to unlock your car.

Having to touch the car to unlock it seems overall easier to me. It doesn't really take any meaningful extra time or movement and it's more secure and easier to use at home. I'm glad the Gen2 has a door button, seems like it should have the best of all options.

You know, my EVs shall always be garaged at home, unlocked, never out in the street or in driveway. All three are set to not lock up at home, which I suppose makes this constant locking/unlocking thing N/A. That's what I meant by not caring. I did notice at one time or another that, if locked, walking with my cell close to my R1S and away from it will unlock/lock. That does not bother me, either.
If only I can stop the Rivian app from always running would be a good thing.
