Just wanted to give you guys some personal feedback on Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity rates. ConEd-New York has 3 different rates for EV owners:
  1. Standard Rate: 15.112 cents per kWh at all times throughout the year.
  2. Standard Rate with Smartcharge-NY Rebates: Offers rebates based on EV charging cycles.
  3. TOU Rate: 2.33 cents per kWh during off-peak hours (midnight to 8 a.m. and weekends), 12.23 cents per kWh from 8 a.m. to midnight (October to May), and 33.05 cents per kWh from 8 a.m. to midnight (June to September).

We switched to the TOU rate a year ago, with the Rivian set to charge during off-peak hours (midnight to 8am). Since then, it has proven to be a great choice. Our Rivian, which is our daily driver, logged about 17,000 miles last year, and we spent on average $28/month on charging. On top of that, without any changes to our daily electricity habits (i.e. we didn’t live by candlelight, same HVAC usage during the summer months, etc.), our average monthly electricity bills also seem to have dropped significantly.

So, all in all, if you haven't done so already, I’d highly recommend looking into the TOU rate for anyone who primarily charges their Rivian at home.

Count your lucky stars that you have rates so low. In SDGE territory the lowest super-off-peak rate(that comes with a $16 fixed monthly surchage) is 12cents and only from midnight-6am. All other hours of the day are 40c+, and summer peak hours of 4pm-9pm are 80c+.

Agreed, definitely look into it, but I'd also advice people not to sign up for a TOU plan blindly. TOU rates in VA are a joke. Our normal rate is about $0.126 / kwh (maybe a touch lower in winter, but not much). TOU rate gets as low as $0.101 / kwh during "super off peak" times in the summer (wow 2 cents less!), but then they nail you for up to $0.231 / kwh during peak summer hours!

I was looking forward to trying out a TOU rate schedule once Dominion finally upgraded my meter, but I am far better off with the standard rate. I'd blow through my savings with AC use, especially since I work from home. Not that I'm complaining about overall cheap power, but they are definitely not trying to incentivize EV charging in VA.

Those rates are pretty decent, to be honest.
In Texas things are a bit different, and the plan I currently have is the one that worked best for me for the past few years. It's 28 cents from 6am to 8pm, and $0 charge from 8pm to 6am daily.

So in summer specifically with the Texas heat, what I do is to really (REALLY!) cool down the house during the night and that reduces my bill during the day.

All charging for both the Tesla and Rivian is done for free at night :)

I have TOU rates in the Portland OR vicinity with PGE. It's like 0.04/kWh from 10pm to 6am but sadly it is going away at the end of the year.

To be replace by a not as good 'time of day' pricing that is 0.08/kWh overnight but a whopping 0.41/kWh between 5pm and 9pm, sadly the hours I am not producing solar :(

Colorado rates, don't see the motivation here, also currently charging for free not at home unless I need to charge to full for a trip.

The Colorado XCEL rates are at least significantly improved from where they were last year when there was only a $0.01 gap between off peak and opt out in the summer.

You’re right that it doesn’t make sense for most people. I have two EV’s, a heat-pump water heater and heat pump hvac. All of which primarily operate in off-peak. And the TOU rates are only mildly beneficial to me.

Where CO TOU rates shine are when you have solar, particularly with a south or west facing roof. You shave a lot off your power bill even if you’re not fully offsetting your usage. Xcel’s method of net metering makes sure this isn’t a guaranteed win though.

I'm .10-.11 all in with my current 11 year old rate in GA. The time of use plan available now would put me at .15-.16 recalculating the last 3 years. Do your research it's not a slam dunk or they wouldn't make any money.

I looked into a battery system for my house that could charge off peak @ .05 and then run the house during non-off peak times which would be ideal. The issue was the battery system would cost $10-$15K about 3-6 years of bills @ current rates.

I have the same provider and TOU rates/plan as @kong and what’s great about it is they give you a one year trial where at the end of it, they will do an analysis for you and if you would’ve spent less on their standard plan, they will give you the difference! So literally risk free. And you can decide whether or not to keep the TOU plan after a year.

Less than $0.07 Per kWh, unless I charge during on peak hours (8am-10pm) in the summer. This is a time of use plan. Gotta love NV Energy.

Nice. Rates vary monthly with the price of fuel but typically sit around 35¢ here in Alaska.

Customer Generation Plan through SRP (AZ), which has a tricky caveat. If you slip up and exceed a very small demand percentage of use during peak hours, you are hammered with massive surcharges. Other wise, $.0056 - $.0058 from 11pm to 5am.

We have a 20kW solar set-up with three Powerwalls, so we're basically off the grid in suburbia. This time of year, we produce more solar than both Rivian's can use and top off our batteries by 1-2pm, so we dump back at a rate of $.006. The next four months we will have a monthly credit on our bill.

It's a lot of work to make this happen and in the summer we're on the grid about 10-15% of each month.

Great stats!

In MA there's no TOU for Residential customers. There is a ChargeSmartMA program which offers rebates which arent huge but better than nothing.

Jeebus. My OFF-peak rates are closer to $0.50/kwh.
