Anyone Driven into Mexico?

Hey there, I purchased a lake house and was considering driving my Rivian down, great charging infrastructure (Tesla) all the way down. I am curious if anyone has crossed the border.

Fine if you drive a Tesla but those stations aren't available to Rivian last I looked even though there are v3 stations.

Make sure you have MX car insurance.

Your call. Just wanted to share what one woman that worked in our office shared. She's from Mexico and was driving down there with her family. They were followed and ultimately car jacked on the highway. I would never drive down there after hearing that.

That is not uncommon. That being said…. The cartel never wants to intentionally detain or mess with Americans it brings too much heat. I have a home in a village where 30% are American and many drive from the lake to Texas regularly they drive during the day on major freeways. I am not worried about carjacking. It’s more about charging. But I appreciate the concern.

I’ve taken an R1T down once and probably won’t do it again. Most of the charging infrastructure is open to non-teslas and reliable enough, but honestly the car got a lot of unwanted attention. We were in northern Baja and crossed in Otay on the way down and came back up through Tecate. Check PlugShare for best info on charging and bring the mobile evse.

If you go to rural Mexico, getting attention for being in an expensive vehicle is highly correlated to losing said vehicle to bandits.

ok. I used to drive a Toureg throughout the heart of Mexico while living there for a year and never felt anything. had a new jetta wagon a few years later. maybe a superexpensive car draws more attention. Just curious. thanks for responding.

It means people stop and stare and talk to each other. When you are in the outskirts of Tijuana or Ensenada, this is not what you want...

I've been going down there for years and it's been bad lately. I won't take the truck down there again, even though it was perfect for the roads and doing light off roading with ample charging around Valle de Guadalupe.

LOL. I have family in Rural towns in Sinaloa that are 60-70% run down by cartels. I’ve driven down to them in my Model 3 Performance and will drive this summer in my R1S. You’ll def get “unwanted” attention because they’ve never seen such a thing and the curiosity of what it is. Trust me when I tell you cartels don’t want a car that it is easily tracked and have to worry about the exact same thing everybody here has to worry about. Charging.
