12v battery created $100k brick

I am confused. Calling it a brick seems over the top. If the car had a flat tire would it be a brick since you couldn’t drive it? An electric care with an unrepairable high voltage battery pack used to be called a brick but these days a lot can be repaired

Rivian towed my bricked 2023 R1T with a dead 12v battery. Said they'd get to it in a couple weeks. In the meantime, they sent me to Enterprise Car renal via Uber to rent a SUV until my battery was replaced.

People are misusing/contorting the term "bricked". The accepted definition of "Bricked" is permanently disabled and not repairable.

As in "I tried to jailbreak my iPhone 5 and now it is bricked."

Can we stop using the term "Bricked" for a failed 12 volt battery?

I can change the tire and be back on the road without them voiding the warranty. Not the case here.

Where does one draw the line for the term "bricked"? Technically nearly anything is repairable with enough time and money. An ICE vehicle can blow the engine and many people would write it off as a loss. For EV, if not under warranty do we say if the cost of repair is X, then it's bricked or say we can never us that term?
In the case of my bricked vehicle, tech came out today. New high voltage battery pack is required. If not under warranty I would call this bricked

On outer island and 12v battery died so dead vehicle. Have a replacement in hand but was told if I replacement it the warranty is void. Read a lot about people replacing these with aftermarket as the life of them is poor at best on OEM version. So far best I have got for replacement date is my already scheduled 7500mile maintenance appointment of March 27. That will be 24 days from the issue happening.
Might be time to cancel R2 reservation and sell R1S if service in hawaiian outer islands will be this poor

UPDATE..... tech left today. Needs new high voltage battery pack. Waiting to see if it will be done on island or sent to Oahu.

There is nothing in the accepted definition about in or out of warranty.

By your description above, your vehicle is not permanently disabled and it is repairable. Therefore, it's not bricked.

It's really a quite simple, clear cut line. Just like "electrocution". Some people say "I got electrocuted!" when they got an electrical shock. If they are talking about it, they were most certainly not electrocuted.

I'll agree to disagree. Semantics is what it is. Diminishing someone's unhappiness about something due to using a term incorrectly, in your opinion, is a little belittling.
For your future reference, Wikipedia, not an accepted scholastic reference but generally accepted by many defines it as:
"A brick (or bricked device) is a mobile device, game console, router, computer or other electronic device that is no longer functional due to corrupted firmware, a hardware problem, or other damage.[1] The term analogizes the device to a brick's modern technological usefulness.[2] Brick is also used as a verb to describe a device entering such a state."
Websters dictionary, which is an accepted scholastic reference defines it as: "to render (an electronic device, such as a smartphone) nonfunctional (as by accidental damage, malicious hacking, or software changes)"
Nowhere in the definition does it state unrepairable or permanently disabled. No longer functional is as close as it gets. Until a repair replacing the main battery on my vehicle happens, it is no longer functional.

They can’t (and won’t) void a warranty for replacing a 12V battery. That’s just FUD.

They can void out the 12v battery portion of the warranty, and if you cause other problems during the change, those issues won't be covered.
