I'm likely a no. I appreciate Tesla's autosteer/FSD and I was told by Rivian folks in the know and on several occasions that the Gen1 Rivian will eventually have self-driving. But it's not looking like it'll happen. Plus there are too many little things that are not getting attention on the Rivian that drive us crazy. I love the R1T but the love for an EV truck has less weight than self-driving, for us that is.

Rivian *NEVER* said Gen 1 would have Tesla FSD-level self-driving. If "Rivian folks in the know" told you, they were wrong. Rivian's statements have always been that they are "working toward a self-driving vehicle" (until they removed even that claim with the launch of the Gen 2. Presumably the claimed Gen 2 capability is all they'll ever do.)

In 2018, RJ said R1 was due to launch in 2020, but self-driving was "10-15 years away." That makes it clear that he had no expectation that first-gen vehicles would get self-driving. And as we know, there have been Delays.

And yeah, if you don't need a pickup, R1T was never going to be a good fit.

I have "FSD" on my Tesla, hate it. I leave it disabled 98% of the time and use autopilot.

Personally I greatly prefer Rivian autosteer to either..... But it doesnt work on many roads.

On my model Y, I had all kinds of issues with phantom braking. My S and 3 are rock solid with no issues. I sold the Y because it was so bad for me. Honestly, I didn't like the Y that much as a car either. FSD on either the 3 or S are pretty solid, and both are HW3 cars.

I’m on an 80 acre farm in rural Wisc. Very much need a truck for many reasons. Had I known (or heard ā€œhey wait for Gen2ā€¦ā€) that Gen1 was not having self-driving I would’ve waited. Instead, I have an enjoyable and wonderful EV truck that’s borderline exhausting to drive on long trips, compared to my Model S that has driven thousands of miles hands free on rural roads nearly flawlessly—reducing driving fatigue ranks high on my list. That said, I absolutely love having a roof top camper on the R1T, being able to charge power tools, and run a starlink system from the R1 is a game changer for us.

I voted yes, and already on my second one. lol.

I've owned 5 Tesla's now since 2015 but find the Rivian to be so much more enjoyable to drive.

FSD to me is still too annoying. I also rarely use it. It just can't drive good enough as I can and I just do not have the patience for how it drives. All I need is traffic aware cruise control and lane keep for long drives. For regular driving around town, I'm plenty happy driving myself.

You sound like a perfect candidate for Comma.AI. it has worked for me even on dirt roads.

Interesting that you mention comma.ai. I was recently watching some videos on YouTube and considering the 30 day trial. Strongly considering it with an upcoming summer trip.

I was a pretty early adopter for the Rivian and it has been awesome so far. It is still a work in progress though very usable as is. They are still trying to crack the speed control signals but as for following the lanes, it does very well.

It is also full hands-free and I love the cooperative driving model. For example, you can guide it and it doesn't stop work, it just resumes whenever you let go again. It has been a game change for me truck when dealing with monotonous roads and traffic.

I voted yes. I have a sub 6k VIN R1T that I bought used a year ago. Not my first EV, have had 3 Tesla's and a Chevy Bolt, but I needed a truck again (I almost exclusively drove F-150's before I switched to EV after selling my boat) and the R1T fit my needs perfectly.

It hasn't been perfect, and I'm looking at it's 5th service visit in the year I've owned it for quite a few major things, but honestly this is hands-down my favorite vehicle that I've had so far and I would 100% buy it again. There's really nothing else on the market that is as jack-of-all-trades as the Rivian is.

I'll change my vote from yes, to a maybe. The wind noise issue has me at the end of my rope. Truck is amazing until about 70 mph. The wind noise from 75 mph up wants to pray at times that an asteroid hits my truck when it is parked and I am nowhere near it.

The quality control regarding putting the glass and roof in makes Tesla look like QC pros. I don't think there is a piece of glass that was put in correctly on my truck. I spent 5 hours going through and trying to plug all the uneven seams yesterday to deal with the GD wind noise.

The alignment looks like they were drunk when they did this. I shouldn't have to do this. All is amazing at 70 mph of airspeed. Once you hit 75 it is incredibly annoying and I am tired of cranking up the radio to mask it. The work I put in helped, but I am just so pissed about having to do it and I am still not sure yet if it is low enough I can live with it, now that I am keenly aware of it. Even the Cyberdumpster was better than my truck stock.

I voted no, but that masks my actual love for the truck. As long as you don’t have to get it serviced, the vehicle is magnificent.

god help you if you have a problem though…

Voted no, for context I’m only leasing though.
Do I like Rivian as a brand - yes.
Do I like the truck - yes.
Do I like that Rivian appears to actually listen to its users for future improvement updates - yes
Do I like that Rivian have fixed (most of) my issues as they come up - yes.
Do I like the amount of times I’ve had to take it in for issues - no.
Unfortunately, that’s the hard part for me, it’s the distance each way to take it in / pick it up, it takes months to even get it seen though, so something that’s reasonably simple likely feels exaggerated to be worse than it is, purely because I have to live with it longer than I feel I should have to and unnecessarily get annoyed with it whilst waiting for it to be fixed.
A lot of yes answers, but the negative in my head has a lot of weight. Maybe down the road on say a ā€œGen 3ā€ when a lot of the ā€˜problems’ have been ratified and smoothed out, it will be great to jump back into Rivian.
