Lukas sent an email earlier that they will be able to enable longitudinal control with an add on box. It should be available in about a month. I of course signed up for one. That will give Comma.AI control over the speed.

Hasta la vista Driver+!
Here is OP Long in action in the Rivian with Lukas' test fork.

Hey, I know you.

I did some testing today with the Lukas branch of SunnyPilot with longitudinal control while carefully towing a trailer. It did a surprisingly good job.

Biggest issue is still how far away it stops from a vehicle in front. In general it still needs more torque on a lot of turns even without a trailer. By now I already know when I am going to need to add some input.

Overall it managed speed pretty well. It did have what i'd call some minor "phantom braking" events but nothing like my Model Y used to experience. In all fairness it was raining pretty heavily so they were demanding conditions. I'd give it a solid B+ so far. It seemed to recognize speed limit signs too, or maybe by accident it sped up from 30 to 45mph right when the speed limit changed. It was right after the main display of the Rivian showed it changing to 45.

If it wasn't for Comma.Ai, I'd seriously thinking about selling my G1 truck given how terrible Driver+ is. I had no idea it was so horrendous when I drove it. It seems like Comma give my truck a new lease on life. It was so inferior to even AP on a Tesla, let alone FSD.

That I can use it while carefully towing is huge plus and something that trumps FSD or ADAD on the G2 Rivians.

So is it accurate to say the “extra box” that was mentioned is not a thing needed for longitudinal control long term or ? I haven’t had a chance to watch Gerry’s video yet

I think you could say it's only necessary if you want to be able to change set speed with the steering wheel controls. It will also give us access to the blind spot radar which, while not required for OP Longitudinal, is still useful in its own right.

Honestly, if you're just interested in having OP Long and the steering wheel controls aren't that important to you, then Lukas' test build is a great fork to run right now as a daily driver!

Phantom braking and stopping way too far are huge issues in the Lukas build I ran. I'm reloading it as we speak for a long trip tomorrow, and sad to hear it's still broken.

Interesting! I haven't experienced any phantom braking using OP Longitudinal. The distance between the lead car when stopping is definitely an issue, and it's a Rivian-specific issue that will be addressed soon.

The phantom braking was there and it was fairly minor. I am hyper sensitive to it now. I had a trip with my Model Y where it phantom braked almost 100 times on a 54 mile stretch of road in Alabama. You'd think I would have turned it off after the first 2 or 10, but I just had to see how many it would do on that one stretch of road.

Some of those were almost panic stop hard. With my Rivian, it was more of a let off the accelerator with a bit of regen. One was clearly caused by a tree branch hanging low, but I didn't think it was in the way of the truck but depending on your approach you could hit it. Again, I was driving in pretty bad conditions and normally I wouldn't use something like this but I wanted to see how it would do. Honestly, it was better than Tesla's earlier AP would do. Let's say about a year ago.

Turns out I had seen the video and smashed that like button already… with no additional add on that seems like a great start!

Looking forward to hear about the mod/ add-on (and of course code development) that was mentioned to make this more feasible with the oem buttons on the steering wheel.

Can someone explain how Beartech’s discord is different than the Comma ai discord? TIA!

Somehow I joined Beartechs thinking it was the main server for development , but it seems the Comma ai is the main one.

Is this thread the main Rivian focused Comma ai discussion across all the webs so far?

As far as I know, Beartech is just the manufacturer of a particular magnetic mount accessory for the Comma 3X. The Comma discord is, of course, the OG discord destination for Openpilot/Comma discussion.

Thanks. That makes sense with respect to what I’ve seen in the various channels there.

How’s your mount held up in the heat Gerry? My fear is the discussions around VHB coming un stuck in blazing summer days could be an issue since I park outside a lot.

It's held up fine so far! I do take down the Comma on particularly hot days if I can't park in the shade, but I think it'd hold up even if I didn't do that.

I've used VHB in ultra hot environments, it's fine. My bigger issue is that the Comma itself is getting super hot, and giving a warning. And it's not summer. Removing it all the time is a no-go, I'd just get rid of it. I'd both forget, and be pissed off at the stupidity of it. Everything else works fine hanging on a hot windshield. This seems like a big failure.

With the Chun mount, it is easy to take down. It gets very hot in Texas. In my Teslas I've seen cabin temps over 150F. I'll take it down just to make it less of a theft target depending on where I am. It takes about a second to remove and stow or place back on the mount.

The mount has worked very well. Even with full power launches while acceleration testing, it hasn't let go of the Comma yet.

I second this. The Chun mount is awesome. Makes taking it down and putting it back up a breeze.

Unfortunately the harness mod will make things a bit more complicated since we have to use another USB-C cable to plug into the secondary port in the Comma, but I think I can use a magnetic USB-C adapter to make it easier.
