No, the price difference is because Lukas basically hand-builds his harnesses whereas Comma has their mass-produced. Lukas can also ship his harnesses right away while there is still a backorder wait time for the Comma harnesses.

Lukas' harness DO have the secondary port already built in so all that's needed is the pigtail adapter, whereas the Comma harnesses will need the harness mod AND the pigtail adapter.
Haven't been keeping up that often. Where can I get more info on the specifics about the secondary port built in, like why this is needed or more convenient?

What is the difference if we just buy the comma ai harness?

The secondary port will allow you to use the steering wheel buttons to adjust the speed when using Comma longitudinal control. Otherwise you have to use the device to control the speed by using the plus or minus on its screen.

It works pretty well that way and I am still on the fence if I want to go with the steering wheel buttons or not. I don't really adjust my speed that often and I can use the accelerator to speed up and it sets my new "cruise speed" at whatever speed I accelerated too. I can always tap the brake, and use the gearshift stalk to set the new speed.

Is it as convenient as the steering wheel buttons? No, but it isn't that bad either. I sometimes confuse the buttons on my truck as they are the opposite of my Teslas.

My understanding is that the secondary port allows the connection of a dongle (converter) which reads the steering wheel button presses and passes them on to the Comma via the secondary port. This is like the dongles which are paired with aftermarket stereos to permit the use of the vehicle’s steering wheel audio buttons. In both cases omitting the dongle just means you have to interact with the new device directly rather than with the built-in steering wheel buttons.

It will also give us access to the blind spot monitoring radar so that we can do nudgeless lane changes without changing lanes into another car. Lukas has also gotten access to a third can bus with the secondary port, but we don't know if there's anything useful on there yet.

Very nice!

I consider the ADAS features to be nice to have and not a requirement, but for those with Gen 1 vehicles who place more importance on this, I think they are going to jump on this.

This sounds good enough that I’m likely to buy after the hardware stabilizes. Is it safe to say that with the current hardware (Comma using both ports with associated under-dash harness/adapter) this will make the Gen 1 vehicles’ capabilities competitive with Gen 2 and Tesla Autopilot?

It's going to be VERY close. There are a couple of hurdles that whether or not we can resolve are a bit of an unknown right now, but I'm optimistic. For example, the 90-degree steering lockout which prevents us from using autosteering on any turn that requires the steering wheel to turn more than 90 degrees. It faults out once it hits 90 and we lose steering control. Though we HAVE figured out a way to get around the TOTAL loss of steering control, we still haven't found a way to get autosteering to be able to self-steer past that 90-degree limit.

Okay, I can see how a limit of 90-degree steering wheel rotation is an issue on anything other than highways since rotating my steering wheel so the 12 o'clock position (centered) ends up at the 9 o'clock position (90 degrees to the left) gives very little angle on the front wheels. In fact, the pointer is still in the white section of the arc which means the wheels are very close to pointing straight ahead:

Even 180 degrees gets me just barely out of the white section.

Given the creativity and incredible progress made so far, I am hopeful that the community will come up with a work-around.

Thank you for all of the work and info!

Anyone know why there are three Rivian harness options now? Is one maybe the newer version for the new CAN bus ala Lukas?

Thanks. Ordered!

I still need to buy a 6 or 10’ USB C cable too, right?
No, it comes with:
  • long OBD-C cable (9.5 ft)
Should be all you need, except for maybe a right-angle adapter.
