Like a lot of CA natives, my auto renewal in is getting out of hand. Got quotes from AAA and Geico and it’s way too high compared to my current. Nothing has changed in terms of driver record. I’m trying to find alternatives. My friend told me Tesla has insurance but they can’t insure one of my vehicles for some reason. Rivian has insurance but it’s just an email so not sure how soon they respond. Has anyone had good experience with Rivian insurance? Did they save you a lot?

Honestly I don’t think anyone is getting deals on insurance anymore. USAA tried to almost double my insurance after a year with my Rivian even though nothing changed (no tickets, no claims). I switched to Progressive which split the difference but I’m sure they will raise it soon too. It’s BS.

Great experience with Rivian (Nationwide) insurance, although mine may not be a typical case. If you want to see the whole story, it is HERE.
But insurance is never going to go down… only up. Especially given the expensive repairs for EVs and technology-focused vehicles.

So going through Rivian vs calling nationwide directly is the same premium and coverage?

I had a 2015 Tesla and was insured through Ameriprise (Costco) until they went up 50%. I switched to Tesla and was paying $150/month (I'm 65 and have been driving close to 50 years with no points on my record). I bought my Rivian last month and was able to keep my Tesla insurance and it's "only" costing me $190/month (the KBB on my Tesla was $6,500). I checked out Rivian Insurance and it was almost $100/month more! I know that it's impossible to talk to someone at Tesla about insurance (I had to do everything on the app and it seemed like you could only make a change after 30 days) but I recommend trying to figure out how to add your other vehicle if at all possible.

My friend told me Tesla insurance is cheaper than Rivian insurance. Tesla won’t insure one of my vehicles for some reason. If I take my two other vehicles to Tesla insurance, will the original insurance increase my premium on that remaining vehicle? I’m assuming that’s how it’ll work.

I haven't seen a large increase from Progressive but insurance (home and auto) are just other of control everywhere.

I’ve had the same issue with rates going up, switched from GEICO to Amica. They seem decent so far. I switched as they offer a BMW CCA discount l, it’s actually pretty decent with having that (10%)!

The way EV insurance is going, its just another thing that's going turn people away. The old adage that EV's save you a load of running costs (gas, maint) is wiped out by the nearly x2 insurance costs vs ICE.

As someone who moved from the UK, my car and home insurance cost me about $1500 a year (fully comp). Now its x5-7 that. I wondered why then I saw 14 yr olds starting to drive and a load of high schoolers driving like total idiots and got my answer.

Raise the legal driving age to 18 and have cops stop and fine everyone who are on their phones. Just watch the number of accidents fall.

Police officers are not supported by the voters, taxes to pay for polce are not voted for therefore the police departments are not paying police enough to do a good job. I'm not a cop, just live in a town that is losing its PD for lack of funding. Very few tickets are issued, it makes voters mad. Tickets make insurance go up.

I think a lot of insurance companies are "adjusting" their rates as they gain experience with the sky-high repair rates, especially for collision repair. I don't think it has much to do with one's driving record.

Needs to be apples to apples with ICE:

many forget their EV often has:

  • Way more horsepower, often super car levels
  • Often much higher cost vehicle than what was replaced
  • More expensive collision repair

It would be interesting to compare rates of a R1 to a ICE that’s $100K, with 600-850hp

R1s rate with American National doubled since a year ago.
