Is it just me or are the stock Pirellis underperfomers? I’m 65, Colorado mountain driver since I was 16. All types of conditions and countless large SUVs. 1 month old R2S. Two significant rainstorms and multiple handling issues in the water. Is it the tires? The SUV weight? I’ll switch to Defenders tomorrow if it’s the tires.

I’ve never had a sketchier rainstorm experience than on the 22” pirellis. Across the past 5 cars/suvs I’ve owned. Some with pretty subpar tires.
I too would like to know if it’s just the 22” tires or the weight or the SUV (which I would’ve expected to help with grip in rain?)

not sure if you're in a quad motor or not, but in quad motor in the rain with pirellis I could launch the truck from a stop without losing traction, however, if in conserve mode (fwd only) any debris (sand / water) on the road the truck will absolutely go sideways (Front wheel steer type of crab walk)

I'm wondering if you both are NOT quad motor therefore the awd/2wd functionality is different giving you very poor performance in wet conditions similar to conserve mode in a quad motor

What do you mean by handling issues? Hydroplaning, low grip, ???

My alignment was terribly off from the factory so burned through the Scorpion Zeros in only 10k miles. Replaced with Continental Terrain Contact HT and had Rivian align. After 13k miles and counting, the Conti has been a far superior tire by every measure. And definitely grippier on wet roads.

I've had zero complaints about handling or performance on my 21" Pirellis. They only last 13k miles, but they're great in dry/wet/snow/off-road. I'm in a quad. Not sure if the 22" are significantly different tires or if a non-quad is a different story...

No issues with mine even at the end of their useful life (26k miles) as far as handling goes in dry or wet weather the weight of the truck does keep it planted in deep puddles, I'm usually always in AP mode. These are performance biased tires so they are more biased towards dry weather performance over severe weather.

Both. One scary but short hydroplane at around 60 mph and a few quick grip issues.
Performance dual max

What tires do folks recommend for the stock 22” wheels?
There are a few threads in the tire section that goes over most of the choices, most are going with Michelin Defender LTX tires which I am leaning towards in the next couple months.

There are now two different factory tires for 22”. Which one are you complaining about? The original gen1 tire is named as the “Sport” option. It’s a tarmac oriented tire. You live in a high altitude climate; it’s not a suitable tire for all extremes in that climate. Rivian now has a Pirelli Scorpion MS option that should be better suited and better at evacuating water.

When looking at info concerning “Michelin Defender LTX”, beware which one is being talked about. There are two different tires bearing the same name: Platinum and MS2. MS2 is the one that has been favored. The other is Platinum, which is over 60 lbs and less efficient (while having more rugged looks).

Depends, Rivian switched the 22’s to AP 22’s on gen 2’s and they are decent in rain but the stock 21’s that came with my gen 1 were hot garbage in rain and even worse in snow. Defenders are leaps and bounds better in inclement weather.
