It pays to read the first couple of paragraphs in the article:

"The first hurdle the Ram 1500 had to clear was convincing our judges that it deserved consideration. Truck of the Year is only open to all-new or significantly updated trucks and vans. Is a new diesel engine enough warrant inclusion? Yes, because this isn't just a new engine -- this is, strictly speaking, a different technology for the segment."

9,000lbs (6,500lbs or 7,500lbs) 2,500lb difference?

Regardless, I'm still surprised at how low the Hummer tow rating is. Wonder if the Lightning will hit 10,000lbs at any configuration?
That was my bad. math is hard. yes 1500. I love the internet. all math mistakes are always caught.

I hope this well-deserved MotorTrend Truck of the Year honor allows Rivian to gain more attention (and reservations) going forward. Here's another take on the T.O.T.Y. award talking about this first-time double knockout by EV's, with the Lucid Air winning C.O.T.Y. honors.

Let's hope the R1S scores next year in the SUV category. ?

This piece also ties in nicely the historical perspective of MT's first C.O.T.Y. award, back in 1949, given to Cadillac for their innovative V8 engine and it's mind-blowing 140 H.P.

Motor Trend also picked the Edsel for Car of the Year in 1958 and the Corvair a few years later. Folks , it's MotorTrend .. just sayin'
1958 is to 2021 as 1895 is to 1958.

Congrats, you've pointed out two innovative cars that were also failures awarded at the very beginning of the space age.

In 1958 the Ford Thunderbird won MT COTY.

The Corvair was a deserving winner in 1960. Done in by the propaganda of Ralph Nader. The driving dynamics of a rear engined car are different than a front engined car. Not inherently dangerous.

Car of the Year is kinda a wide open category and has tons of entries (greatest dud potential), Truck of the year is the narrowest segment (least competition), but has some of the stiffest competition do to that actual functional demands of the segment (towing, payloads, etc).

The Tesla Model S can win one year, and then the C8 the next.

Both great cars, but quite a wide net.

Put it this way... Take the Car of The Year Lucid Air, SUV of The Year Genesis GV70 and now Truck of the Year R1T, and just say now pick a Vehicle of the Year and I'd happily debate why the R1T walks away with top honors yet again.

It's a super swiss army knife of function, excellence, fun and value.

Air... Too expensive considering a Model S is faster and EQS more luxurious.

GV70... A great SUV, but not furthering anything segment wise.

Rivian R1T checks almost every box, does everything incredibly well, and is basically a new benchmark for a segment right out of the gates.

It's seriously deserves more praise in my opinion.

But let's wait till January 5th and see what's coming down the pipe from GM.

If GM can keep the EV Sierra Denali under 100k, with a near 400 mile range, tow 10-12k, with a 0-60 under 3.5, then the R1T will be in trouble.

I'll be honest though, I don't see it.

It'll probably be over 100k
Range 300-335
Towing 9-10k
0-60 3.5-3.8

There's a reason they're limiting it to the Denali trim. And it's not because they're going to undercut the F150.

I wouldn't dismiss Lucid. Their base model starts at $77k and has a LOT of comfort and luxury features for that price range while still getting an EPA'd 406 miles of range (for a vehicle this size).

True, but it's not eligible because it's not being produced yet nor have they seen what the final product is. I saw a glimpse somewhere, and the interior is FAR less luxurious than the Dream Edition. It is similar to a Model 3/Y, at least the back seat I saw. They can only judge what's out, which is the Dream Edition.

Still a perfectly fine car though.

Yeah, they're amazing vehicles. I started looking at one. But was really disappointed that for anything under 100K, you don't get that never-ending windshield. They swap it in for a traditional window/roof for the lower level models.
