Could not agree with you more….except please allow me to add that fossil fuel companies have been receiving subsidies for a hundred years or more. I was self- employed in the renewable energy industry and really got tired of hearing the old “well the RE industry gets all of the subsidies “. With the second round of the current regieme we are losing ground that we will probably never recover from. A good argument can probably be made that “climate change is a done deal so why make a big deal out of trying to do something about it.” I am an old guy without kids, but for some strange reason I care.
Is it true that orange man plans to subsidize coal to make it competitive with renewables and nat gas?

I feel like I am in the minority on this forum, at least when it comes to the topic of subsidies.

I am in full agreement with the majority of you who love the Rivian brand and the products they have produced. My truck is amazing, and worth every penny.

You guys are not going to convince me that past bad behavior of the government is a good reason to support more bad behavior. Government should not subsidize our industries. Government should not pick winners and losers. Government should get out of the way and let our entrepreneurs create and build great things.

There should be no income tax. Zero. Then nobody will be complaining about government subsidizing one industry over another because of the tax breaks they get. They get none. And we should replace it with the Fair Tax, and tariffs. (I never thought tariffs were a good idea before, but my mind has been changed over the past year.)

I know I am not going to convince you guys to believe in our ability to compete internationally if you already don't think we can. I am 100% certain we can, as long as we use trade policy to level the playing field with those who are not playing fair. That is what is in the process of happening now, and it is a good thing. It will help Rivian and any other company who is producing products in the US.

Anyway, we can go back and forth about his for another two weeks and nobody will be any closer to agreeing. I am going to let everyone else have the last word.

Have a great night and the rest of your week!
This is a dream world that doesn't exist.

We have literally handed the EV industry to China on a silver plate....I mean gold plate.

This is far from a unique observation on my part, but the sum total of the present Administration's actions with respect to the complete alternative energy sector is to hand China an easy win in the global market.

With respect to EV's, it is stating the obvious to say that China has made a decision that the transportation of the future is the EV, and that they intend for Chinese companies to dominate the market. To that end, the Chinese government has "invested" billions of dollars not just in EV technolgy, but also EV (and alternative energy) manufacturing technology. It comes as no surprise then, that Chineses EVs are superior from a technology standpoint than any western (or non-Chinese Asian) EV. With respect to manufacturing, Chinese companies already produce (and sell) something like 70% of the world's EVs. Far worse however, is China's excess manufacturing capacity in EVs, estimated to be between 5 and 10 million vehicles. Keep in mind that this development and production lead also extends to the most important component of EVs, the battery. The estimates are that China may already have the capacity to produce more than double the projected global demand for EV batteries and perhaps up to four times that demand.

You can draw your own conclusions about what all of this means for the future of EV production in the US, or indeed the rest of the non-Chinese world.

It may well be that tax incentives and government subsidies will not help US companies compete in the global EV and alternative energy market, and that the Chinese would dominate regardless. The open hostility that the present Administration has shown toward alternative energy, as shown by not just the OBBBA, but also numerous EOs, combined with its full-throated support of fossil fuels, all but guarantees that outcome however.
I agree in your points Yossarian. However, I think the most folks in the Renewable Energy industries would no longer use the term “alternative energy”. Alternative to what, fossil fuels? It should not be an alternative, it should be the standard. I hesitate to get into semantics but that term can seem kind of derogatory to renewable energy. Just sayin….

Same here. I will never understand the defeatist, apocalyptic death cult mentality of so many of these people. They do not care one bit as long as they can make money from (__insert catastrophe here__), even if it accelerates the deaths of millions and makes the world virtually unlivable. It’s hard to find common ground and any form of compromise when you are working with people that far out there. 😕
I know you are not specifically referring to me, since I don't make any money off the petroleum industry. However, I think many people don't agree with the opinion that oil is accelerating the death of millions and making the world virtually unlivable. If someone believes that, and yet still holds the opinions I hold, then I agree that is really f-ed up. Immoral is the right word.

I think instead of assuming those people are in a "death cult", maybe consider the fact they don't share your opinion regarding the impact of oil. In fact, oil is a part of practically everything we buy and use, and oil has made our world an amazing place.

Without oil we would be still burning wood to cook our food, which would be delivered by horseback at an astronomical cost. And we would be getting dirty from all the dirt streets and horse poop everywhere. LOL.

But the point it, many people think the benefits from oil far, far outweigh the negative consequences. Like me. I think oil has been the core reason for the quality of life we have today, and it even supports the advancement of renewable energy options. Can you even manufacture and sell a BEV without oil? I don't think so.

The people who think oil is a net positive are not evil, they (we) just have a different opinion. And it is an opinion based on facts and reason. It is not an irrational opinion. I am not saying your opinion is irrational either, you just have a different perspective.

The current administration is trying to lower the cost of oil. If successful, it will lower the cost of everything we do. Everything. Including the cost of installing solar panels and massive windmills.

I did want my last post to be the last one I did on this subject but could not let this one go. Sorry to keep the argument going. I will stop now. Seriously.

To be clear, I was not referring to you. Although we don't agree on much of this, you have always been respectful and so far able to have an actual discussion about the topics at hand.

Regarding the "difference of opinion" on the true cost of fossil fuel production/ burning, the scientific evidence is literally overwhelming that it does impact our climate and our health and therefore if one is willing to ignore that evidence, they are obviously ok with the human costs that come with it. The science is that clear on the subject.

Those in that club understandably don't want to be called a "death cult", but IMO if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.....

Just pointing out I don't agree the evidence is as overwhelming as you do. You can call me uneducated, but I don't believe all the evidence. I have seen alternative data that suggests the evidence so many believe a fact is not really fact. Again, I am not ignoring it, I am just not convinced like you are. There are many who are in my camp. We don't believe the world is ending in 10 years, like we have been told over the past 20+ years. They can only lie so many times before I stop believing them.

Well, since none of the science ever said the "world is ending in 10 years", I'm not quite sure how to respond to that type of BS other than to suggest that maybe if you characterize it that way, you aren't looking at it as objectively as you imply.....

And saying "I don't believe the evidence" is really telling:facepalm:

This is false. A true statement would be "the current government doesn't want to take hard working taxpayer money to subsidize car companies like previous ones subsidized Tesla."

The free market should decide. I decided and I didn't need a subsidy to help me decide. I wanted the most awesome truck available in the market so that's what I bought. I don't need someone who has less resources than I do to subsidize my $100k truck. And the current government agrees with me.
Stop subsidizing the oil industry! Only then will it truly be a "free market".

Yep. And then accusing the Dr who kept delivering your test results to you of "lying" because you aren't dead yet.

Actually it is more like getting a second opinion, and even a third, to validate the first. And when the second opinion conflicts with the first you have to decide which to believe.

That is where I am. There are second and third opinions out there that don't agree the evidence is overwhelming.

Most people don't take the time to get that second opinion, which can lead to wrong treatment. I hope if anyone gets diagnosed with some serious medical condition they seek a second opinion before taking drastic action.

I hoped you went there...and you walked right into it.

There's been a 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 1000th opinion that the science is indeed there. You're just choosing to ignore it and find "alt facts."

You'll find plenty of studies that show oil isn't an issue with our climate...but when you find out who funded those studies, it all makes sense. Oh, an "oil and gas industry think tank"...wonder if they have something to lose here.

It's great to get all those opinions. The question is what do you do with that information when you have it? Are you just searching for that single opinion that says what you want to hear even if ALL the other opinions contradict it? Or can you accept the facts as they are?
