I can understand being upset if you have an Explore package, but this is standard practice. Just look at the Hummer, Lightning, and Alleged CT. All will be prioritizing most expensive models first with lower trim models following later. Lucid did it as well.
I don't have an explore package preorder. I was just commenting that it's a cash grab to get desperate people to pay more to get a truck and it wasn't "nice" of them given that no orders are currently locked in. Plus if they were prioritizing the most expensive models, I would have a delivery window for my Max Pack already...

Good email to set expectations properly, I appreciate that (as a Max pack reservation holder).

One thing I think could be made more clear would have been stating whether or not adjusting your configuration from Max/Explore --> Adventure+Lg today or at any point would result in a sooner delivery. I think it's suggested by mentioning 2018/19 holders will have the opportunity to switch, but could be more clear as the website allows you to switch, and I'm guessing a non-zero amount of people are going to do that today.
This indicates that you have the opportunity to do just that:

"To Max pack and Explore preorder holders who have been with us since 2018 and 2019 whose delivery windows may push into 2023 — we value your loyalty and commitment and will be reaching out to you in January to gauge your interest in reconfiguring to an Adventure Package with Large pack battery so that you can take delivery in 2022."

No, I'm pretty sure Adventure trims will see 2022 delivery.
Adventure with large battery, yes. Any vehicle with max battery, no.

“we will be prioritizing building the Adventure Package with Large pack battery during the next year. Explore Package preorders and vehicles with a Max pack battery configuration will follow in 2023.“

He started with some words that gave me the impression we may have to be patient with volume.

It looks like I may be looking at two years wait with no option to upgrade at first.

I do think it was very nice for them to offer Explorer trim levels the ability to upgrade and get their vehicles earlier. I doubt other auto manufacturers would be so kind enough to do that.
Tesla does that not because they are nice but because margins are typically larger on higher trims.

So I'm a Mar 2020 max pack preorder. Guess that means even if I downgraded to the large pack I still wouldn't get it in 2022. I have 200 miles between home and camp, and there is currently exactly 1 DCFC along the route adding a few more miles. On a slight positive, it's an EA charger and someone logged that they charged an R1T there at 165kw on Dec 21st. Still, with cold PA winters and the potential for very light towing, not sure I trust a large pack on 20in ATs on that route. Even Rivian's map of future chargers with estimated location markers look like they chose to ignore those of us that enjoy adventuring in the 1/2 million acres of the Allegheny National Forest and additional 1/2 million acres of public land in north central PA. Not happy right now. Expected. But not happy.

Checked plugshare again. There is 1 more DCFC, but only 55 miles into the trip. And someone charged an R1T there on Xmas. So at least there seems to be an employee or some off the social media grid R1T owner at least traveling through Western PA.

This RJ email is further proof that CS is clueless and merely exists to placate pre-order holders. They stated to many of us just last week that R1S explore would begin production in August 2022. Clearly that was incorrect and many with explore package probably kept that configuration expecting only a 3 month delay. So glad that I have no patience and switched to adventure last week.

I believe we have the same email. 2 paragraphs above the one you quoted says this, which is why I mentioend the email today:
"Last month, all Launch Edition preorder holders received their estimated delivery timing window. We will begin sending Adventure and Explore Package preorder holders their estimated delivery window later today."
Thanks for pointing that out! It’s a little early here and I was wrong to interpret the statement I quoted about the account page as contradicting and taking precedence over the email statement. It didn’t help that I received two emails from RJ.

If I get an email with a delivery window today then I‘ll be thrilled and if I have to wait until early next year for the information via the account page then I’m fine with that, too.

I saw a RIvian Blue R1T parked in Laguna Beach yesterday and these sightings keep me aware of the fact that it’s a matter of “when“ and not “if” I’ll get an R1S.

If it were a cash grab, then Max pack @ $10K would be priority!

We are all excited, and it was a long email so it is easy to miss stuff. That is one good thing about this forum in that many other posters find the stuff we miss. I missed the part you pointed out, so I am grateful you posted it.
And you got 2 emails from RJ? I am jealous, as i only got 1.
I think you west coasters are going to get things much sooner than we in the congested, winter weather rusted-out northeast.

Probably not a whole lot of additional margin/profit from max pack over the large. Slowing down production by introducing a new variable is way more costly.

Someone please check my math but based on the figures from RJ there is a maximum possible of about 15k Launch Editions.

A few things to keep in mind..

Getting the factory to full production is going to take time. By prioritizing one trim level, one battery package they simplify the process. Also, if 80% of their orders are the large pack, they are putting a dent in their largest reservation backlog.

Since the R1T and R1S share a line, it would not surprise me to see the R1S slip again.

CS can only respond with what management gives them. It sounds like ramp up has been in flux with day-to-day updates.

I will say one incredible thing about this current car market, is the demand for capable EV’s is there. Look at the F150 lightning, Hummer, Rivian, etc. We’re all going to have to be patient.
